Doctor Who: Top 10 Most Fashionable Companions | ScreenRant
One of the biggest conversations surrounding the cult science fiction television series Doctor Who involves the Doctor's eccentric sense of style. Whether it's their bow ties, oversized scarves, or hideous rainbow coats, every incarnation of the Doctor has somehow made their mark on fashion. Even their many companions have gotten in on the act, creating some iconic outfits throughout the series.
A few of these companions have managed to stand out from the crowd with their own unique senses of style. Whether in the classic series or the current revival, fans have found plenty of companions with noteworthy fashion sense.
10 Dr. Grace Holloway
When fans were first introduced to Dr. Grace Holloway in the Doctor Who 1996 TV movie, she was enjoying the opera in a blue ballgown when she was called into duty. Although the rude interruption left her with no time to change, Grace was able to perform her work as a surgeon while still decked out in her finery.
While the gown is an iconic moment in and of itself, Grace's other outfits portrayed the same amount of poise, with silk blouses and high-end cloaks. Grace only made one on-screen appearance, but her stories continue within Doctor Who's expanded universe.
9 Jamie McCrimmon
Not everyone can pull off a kilt, but for Second Doctor companion Jamie McCrimmon, kilts were just a part of his staple wardrobe. Even when faced with dated ridicule about wearing "a skirt," Jamie stayed true to his Scottish heritage and refused to compromise.
At the same time, Jamie was capable of mixing up his style whenever he needed to. While staying onboard the TARDIS, Jamie incorporated plenty of modern fashion into his look as well, creating unique and unorthodox looks in every episode.
8 Fitz Kreiner
The Eighth Doctor's adventures have been recorded through various audio and novel formats, some of which deserve their own full episode. Of his many companions, guitarist Fitz Kreiner stood out from the rest with his outlandish suits, rockstar hair, and leather jacket. One story even involved Fitz wearing a wedding gown to a swordfight, perfectly encapsulating his campy nature.
Thanks to his good looks and marvelous sense of style, Fitz Kreiner managed to accumulate quite a few love interests over the years - including the Doctor. The two were noted to be incredibly close, and LGBTQ+ Whovians consider Fitz to be a fan favorite.
7 Jo Grant
Making her debut at the beginning of the 1970's, Josephine 'Jo' Grant's style encapsulated a carefree look that perfectly contrasted with the dark and elegant Third Doctor, played by Jon Pertwee. Some of her favorite additions to outfits included large fluffy coats, a bright red tie, and plenty of various rings on her fingers.
One accessory that Jo would ultimately never add to her wardrobe, however, was glasses. This was unfortunate for Katy Manning, who was legally blind without them and was often escorted around the set by Jon Pertwee so she wouldn't get hurt.
6 Bill Potts
Even though Metacritic gave Doctor Who's season 10 a middling score, companion Bill Potts and her eclectic style were agreed to be the highlight of the series. With bright colors, eye-catching prints, and customized jackets, Bill's fashion sense perfectly reflects the clothes worn by modern young adults.
At the same time, Bill was just as capable of dressing up for the occasion. The green frock coat and 1800's dress she wears in the episode "Thin Ice" proves a flattering combination for her and offers some diversity in her looks.
5 Ian Chesterton
Ian Chesterton made up the first main TARDIS team, alongside the Doctor's granddaughter Susan and fellow teacher Barbara Wright, the latter with who he fell in love and later married, becoming one of Doctor Who's best couples. Ian's style has always reflected that of a cool teacher admired by his students, and he is rarely seen without his trademark suit and tie.
In a few stories, Ian borrows an Ulster coat from the First Doctor and wears it well, despite it being several sizes too big. Ian's fashion sense heavily reflected the '60s of the time, particularly when it came to men's fashion.
4 Captain Jack Harkness
Ever since Captain Jack Harkness debuted in the beloved season one two-parter, "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances," his trademark overcoat has become synonymous with his character. While Jack did not initially wear his coat for every episode with the Ninth Doctor and Rose, later episodes have him sporting it every time he appears.
Not all of Jack's outfits are hits, however. One episode of the spinoff audio drama, The Many Lives Of Captain Jack, had him disguised as the Sixth Doctor, complete with the eye-searing rainbow coat.
3 Polly Wright
Another early companion of the Doctor, Polly Wright was often referred to as 'The Duchess' by her love interest Ben because of how sophisticated she was. With a wardrobe full of the latest 1960's trends and long eyelashes, Polly fit the royal title perfectly.
From stylish newsboy caps to chic coats, Polly's fashion always seemed to be perfectly on point. While her episodes on Doctor Who were filmed exclusively in black and white, comics and colorized images depicted her in bright pink - a color that perfectly suited actress Anneke Wills' fair complexion.
2 River Song
With a wicked sense of humor and a flair for the dramatic, River Song can accomplish anything, from outwitting the Doctor to surviving a deadly Terminator attack. Most importantly, she does all of this while looking dressed to kill. Whether she's wearing classy evening gowns or military fatigues, River always manages to look impeccable.
Additionally, River employs a variety of disguises and costumes while traveling the galaxy. Some of these include a nun's habit or a Cleopatra-esque outfit, fit for a queen.
1 Romana I
The first incarnation of Romana, played by Mary Tamm, was a glamorous woman who proved herself amongst the most intelligent of the Doctor's companions. She was also the most fashionable of all companions, preferring to wear long elegant princess dresses. The most famous of these dresses was pure white, with a long fluffy cloak to match.
Her second incarnation had plenty of iconic looks as well, but none of them compared to the sheer elegance of the original Romana. While Mary Tamm only played her for one season, she left a huge mark on the series, style-wise.
