Twisted Metal Tease Shared By Reliable Battlefield Leaker

There could be a new Twisted Metal game in the works for 2023 if a noted gaming news leaker is to be believed. Sony's dark vehicular combat franchise hasn't seen a new entry since 2012’s PlayStation 3 reboot, though crazed mascot Needles “Sweet Tooth” Kane has appeared as a playable character in the crossover fighting game PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

The premise behind the Twisted Metal series is a simple one: a dark entity known as Calypso offers to grant the wish of whoever wins his titular vehicle combat tournament, prompting a rogue’s gallery of insane killers, anti-heroes, and other disturbed souls to challenge each other in carnage-filled battles across the globe. The series has spanned seven main games, a few kid-friendly and portable spin-offs, and various imitators such as Star Wars: Demolition. Currently, a Twisted Metal TV adaptation is in the works, with Lego Batman and Bojack Horseman star Will Arnett attached to play the psychotic, flame-haired clown Sweet Tooth.

Yesterday, video game news hound and DualShockers writer Tom Henderson posted a cryptic message to Twitter that suggests that a new Twisted Metal game could be planned for 2023. This tweet consists solely of that year and an old promotional image of Sweet Tooth and his deadly ice cream truck. Meanwhile, Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe says that if such a game is in the works, it’s the first he’s heard of it, revealing on Twitter that Sony has yet to ask him for his input or even inform him about any new Twisted Metal sequels - though it should be mentioned that he is no longer with PlayStation.

It’s worth noting that Tom Henderson has made plenty of correct predictions before, such as the recent announcement of Battlefield 2042 - which he had posted about several months before it was officially unveiled back in June. He has also made several hints about the yet-to-be-announced Grand Theft Auto 6, with noted industry insiders like Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier supporting Henderson’s claims that the next installment in Rockstar’s long-running crime series could be revealed in the next couple of years.

This doesn’t mean that Tom Henderson’s prediction of a new Twisted Metal game should be taken as an absolute certainty, especially if David Jaffe hasn’t been informed of it yet. On the other hand, it has been nine years since fans have gotten behind the wheel of the death-dealing vehicles of the Twisted Metal franchise, so a new game would surely be welcome for those longing to tear up the streets of Paris as Sweet Tooth or any other member of Twisted Metal’s colorful cast of killers.
