Pokémon Unite Sets Blissey Release Date & Teases Support Moves
The next Pokémon for Pokémon Unite has been revealed and it's none other than Blissey. This comes as surprising news given that Blastoise has been confirmed as an upcoming character for the game since launch. Although Blissey was confirmed ahead of this announcement in a recent datamine, there's still no news on when the Squirtle, Wartortle, and Blastoise line will make its debut.
Like many titles in the MOBA genre, Pokémon Unite has a wide array of different kinds of characters. Classes in Pokémon Unite include a range of five categories: All-Rounder, Speedster, Attacker, Defender, and Support. The last group doesn't battle directly; rather, they assist their teammates with health restoration and attack buffs. Some Support Pokémon can attack using status moves. For example, Wigglytuff can put enemies to Sleep using Sing.
The official Pokémon Unite Twitter revealed that Blissey will be added on August 18th. As a Support Pokémon, Blissey uses its eggs to heal teammates or increase their basic attack speed. This makes Blissey only the second Pokémon capable of healing, as Twitch streamer Patterz pointed out. It also has a new Unite Move. Bliss Assistance will cause Blissey to dash in the direction of a teammate in trouble. Upon arrival, Blissey will block the enemy's attack.
Blissey's reveal has gotten a mixed reception from players. There's no shortage of fans excited for the Generation II Pokémon's inclusion. However, a large number of fans are disappointed that Blissey was added before fan-favorite Blastoise. Blastoise is confirmed for Unite and will be added at a future date. Many originally assumed it would be added before Gardevoir and the mystery Pokémon – now revealed to be Blissey.
There's also a fair bit about Blissey that is still secret. Its Unite Move in particular is raising some questions. It's unclear if the player will be able to choose which ally to defend, or if the process will be automatic. Manual selection would likely make Blissey more useful. Either way, the ability to defend teammates while healing them could set it apart from fellow Pokémon Unite healer Edelgoss. An attack speed buff is always welcome in fast-paced matches, too.
Blissey may not be the most requested Pokémon, but it has its fair share of fans. Its inclusion in Pokémon Unite could boost its popularity. The addition of any character will surely shake up Pokémon Unite's metagame, which is still in its infancy. For example, Bliss Assitance could really influence the flow of matches by preventing KOs. It'll be interesting to see what new strategies will be created once Blissey is live.
Pokémon UNITE is available now for Nintendo Switch. A version for mobile devices will be released this September.
