MCU’s Next Superhero Teams Could Set Up A More Accurate Civil War

Marvel could craft a bigger and more comic-accurate adaptation of the Civil War storyline with the possible formation of multiple superhero teams in Phase 4 of the MCU. The Civil War comic book storyline pitted the world's greatest superheroes against each other, with Iron Man leading the side that supported the Superhuman Registration Act and Captain America leading those superhumans and vigilantes who refused to be controlled by outside forces. This conflict involved dozens of known heroes and villains, including entire teams that fought against each other with the intent to kill.

The MCU adapted this famous storyline in Captain America: Civil War, where the Avengers broke apart due to their clashing views on the Sokovia Accords, a proposition that served the same purpose as the comics' Superhuman Registration Act. Although the MCU's Civil War involved most of the Avengers and resulted in the Earth's Mightiest Heroes splitting up, the movie is often criticized for not matching the stakes of the comic books. In the movie, nobody really wanted to hurt their opponents during the airport battle, and the scale of the fight paled in comparison to its comic book counterpart.

Captain America: Civil War managed to capture the essence of the conflict with the MCU's established characters, but to call it an actual "civil war" would be inaccurate. Phase 4 is introducing many new characters with varying origins, abilities, and allegiances. It's unlikely that so many heroes will agree on all their methods and standpoints. These new characters also set up the introduction of several super-teams such as the Young Avengers, the Thunderbolts, the Dark Avengers, the Midnight Sons, and the Fantastic Four. This amount of teams brings a higher level of responsibility to enhanced beings, as the actions of one group could tarnish the name of the rest, leading to a huge conflict with more significant consequences.

Phase 4 titles like WandaVision and Loki prove that superheroes and supervillains are still not under control. The introduction of the multiverse and branching timelines seem to be the biggest threats in the MCU so far and could lead to bigger disagreements than the Sokovia Accords. Whole MCU superhero teams might take a stance against the others, and a full-scale war between superheroes (and supervillains) could truly shake the world. The aftermath of such a big conflict could also bring meaningful consequences such as heroes breaking bad, teams breaking apart or exchanging members, and possibly irreversible tragedies.

The proliferation of superteams would raise tensions among regular humans. The original Avengers weren't perfect, but at least they proved that they had the best intentions. When new groups appear only to wreak havoc — like the New Warriors, who kicked off the events of Civil War in the comics due to their irresponsibility — the world could grow wary of superpowered beings. While a new team like the charismatic Fantastic Four could become the voice of reason, the world could still start to judge the enhanced on the basis of their powers. This would set up the general distrust against mutants and the rise of new opposing sides, such the Brotherhood of Mutants and the X-Men.
