Fantastic Four's Anti-Galactus Suit Makes Iron Man Look Like an Amateur
If there's one thing Tony Stark does better than anyone else, it's design special Iron Man suits to take out specific villains, and yet despite all his genius, he's never constructed anything quite as impressive as the Fantastic Four's Anti-Galactus Suit - a towering mech designed to take on the Devourer of Worlds himself. The suit appears in Fantastic Four #557, from Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch, and at the time of the story was literally the most dangerous weapon on planet Earth.
A vital presence in the Marvel Universe - shepherding the current reality towards its next form and often taking up arms against larger-scale threats - Galactus is a longtime foe of the Fantastic Four, originally agreeing to spare Earth thanks to the team's heroic efforts (with then-unprecedented help from Uatu the Watcher.) Of course, things are always changing in the Marvel Universe, and the Fantastic Four have faced Galactus again many times, sometimes as an antagonist, and sometimes as an ally against more chaotic evils. Because of this, Reed Richards - aka Mister Fantastic - has never really stopped coming up with ways to fend off the Devourer of Worlds, and the Anti-Galactus Suit might just be his greatest.
The Anti-Galactus Suit has never actually been used against Galactus, who has generally kept to his promise to refrain from destroying the Fantastic Four's home planet. Instead, Fantastic Four #557 sees Reed climb into the mech to fight CAP - a 'Conserve And Protect' robot touring Earth on a quest to destroy every conceivable weapon. CAP was designed as the watchdog of Nu-World, a parallel reality created by a radical group of scientists intent on escaping the inevitable death of Earth. While CAP was intended to prevent the invention or use of weaponry on Nu-World, the robot's AI accidentally learns about Earth, which triggers its core programming to go on a weapon-destroying rampage. In order to prevent CAP going too far, Mister Fantastic activates the Anti-Galactus Suit, knowing CAP won't be able to resist making a beeline for the most powerful weapon on the planet.
While not as dangerous as Galactus, CAP is no pushover, designed by a team of the planet's greatest scientists. Earth's heroes try to stop CAP, but the super-advanced robot defeats forty of the most powerful Avengers and X-Men in a huge combined brawl, showing the incredible threat it poses if allowed to run free. After realizing that CAP can't directly harm him thanks to code implanted by Alyssa Castle (one of the architects of Nu-World, and an old flame of Mister Fantastic), Reed takes CAP down with a single punch from the Anti-Galactus Suit, a vast shockwave blasting out from the force of the collision.
Mister Fantastic quickly deactivates the Anti-Galactus Suit, revealing that because of its massive energy consumption, it costs a billion dollars a second to run. The Anti-Galactus Suit has limited usefulness, eating up resources at an alarming rate and requiring a huge support staff to run, but Mister Fantastic makes it clear that its destructive potential is greater than any nuclear weapon, even if Reed admits certain features, such as the Galactus-style helmet, are just there to look cool.
Hopefully, comic fans will one day get to see the Fantastic Four actually test the Anti-Galactus Suit against Galactus himself, but while Mister Fantastic's inventions can have unexpected consequences, they generally do what he intends them to, suggesting this towering mech is genuinely capable of beating the Devourer of Worlds in a fist fight. While Iron Man has been able to hijack or modify existing suits like the Godkiller Armor and a deceased Celestial - and conceived of the ultra-powerful Godbuster Armor in virtual reality - he's yet to construct anything that quite equals the Fantastic Four's Anti-Galactus Suit - a fact that likely keeps egotistical genius Tony Stark up at night, even as everyone else sleeps soundly knowing that Mister Fantastic is ready should Galactus ever return.
