X-Men's Colossus is Finally Returning To Save Mutantkind

Piotr Rasputin, otherwise known as Colossus, has taken on the mantle of a rather quaint, pacifist farmer in recent X-Men comics, but a preview for X-Force #24 is showing him back in his metal skin, fighting for the safety of mutantkind. Krakoa and the reputation of mutantkind is hanging in a delicate balance right now, and there are many who wish for them to fail... including Piotr's own brother, Mikhail.

After a mission in Russia seemingly traumatized him into a more peaceful existence, Colossus has been pretty MIA lately: staying out of missions and mostly living a farmer's existence in the Savage Land. He may have attended the Hellfire Gala, but he's stepped away from violence, battle, and X-Force drama, opting instead to help farm plants used in the mutant medicine that's become a main export of Krakoa. Unfortunately for Marvel's literal man of steel, it looks like his older brother Mikhail's schemes are putting mutantkind and Krakoa at risk; meaning he's not going to be able to avoid the fight for much longer.

CBR has published the solicitation for X-Force #24 by Benjamin Percy and Martin Coccolo, featuring a cover by Joshua Cassara, which hints that something big is coming for Piotr. If he isn't able to help stop it, it could lead to repercussions for mutantkind that go beyond death. That may not seem like much considering mutants now have the ability to resurrect their people, but there's no doubt that things are about to get hairy after Piotr's long stint in reclusive normalcy. Percy states "that something has been quietly happening in the background... and the biggest X-Man has one of the biggest stories of all to tell."   Check out the solicitation for the October release below:

X-FORCE #24

  • BIG BROTHER!
  • MIKHAIL RASPUTIN’s nesting doll agents have infiltrated Krakoa before, but never like this. If BLACK TOM can’t root out their invasion of BEAST, the consequences go beyond mere death. Time for PIOTR RASPUTIN, A.K.A. COLOSSUS, to step in.

Will Piotr be able to stop his brother? Going off of the cover, he's certainly not going to be able get through this without shedding some blood and shirking his newly found pacifist stance. There's a lot of potential danger to come with the reveal of this upcoming story. Mikhail's nesting doll agents have already been able to infiltrate Krakoa once, and there are plenty (human, mutant, and more) who aren't too fond of the new civilization: wanting to learn its secrets and bring about its downfall.

The possible invasion of Beast is also of particular concern considering the knowledge and secrets he has in that mind of his. He and Sage may have a protocol in place to end each other's lives if they are compromised, but what happens if they aren't aware of the infection? In X-Force #18 something was getting into Beast's head through his subconscious while he was unconscious, trying to probe him for information. Sage had no choice but to end his life, but she also ponders in her logbook whether this "psychic invader" could be like something akin to malware and have a lasting presence. If so, does that mean it could have nested in his Beast's brain even through the process of resurrection?

If that's the case, then the X-Men could be in even more potential danger than assumed by Mikhail's threat alone. Beast is the only one who's been crooked enough to see that something is coming, even if that crookedness led him to have Colossus psychologically tortured to make sure he hadn't betrayed Krakoa. If he's been compromised then there may not be anyone suspicious and, frankly pessimistically skeptical, enough to stop it before it's too late. Hopefully Colossus will be able to rally and overcome his trauma from the rescue mission in Russia in time to join his teammates and stop this impending threat. If not, both the X-Force and mutantkind as a whole could be in serious trouble.
