The Origin Of Thor's 'Brother' Bill is More Horrifying Than Fans Realize

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Beta Ray Bill #4

In the latest issue of Marvel's Beta Ray Bill, it's revealed just how horrifying and gruesome the origin of Thor's greatest ally and brother truly was. While Bill has been traveling to the dark realm of Muspleheim to retrieve a new magical weapon to replace his hammer Stormbreaker, his ship was caught in the clutches of a giant monster that is forcing him to relive his darkest memories. As a result, readers are taken through a grim tour of Bill's past, including the transformation that turned him into the horse-cyborg warrior he is today - and it's pure body horror.

In prior issues of Beta Ray Bill from Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer, Bill could no longer stand being without his hammer Stormbreaker, which Thor had broken during a tense conflict. While Bill is certainly formidable with other weapons, the true value of Stormbreaker was the magic that had been imbued within it by the All-Father Odin. The power allows Bill to transform back into his humanoid form, rather than remaining trapped in the more monstrous cyborg body his own people turned him into in order to protect them. With Odin unable to forge Bill a new hammer, he has chosen to instead travel to Muspelheim to claim Surtur's Twilight Sword for himself, believing that it could grant him the magic he's too long been without.

Now, Beta Ray Bill #4 sees Bill and his allies being trapped in the clutches of a giant tentacled monster, and it's forcing Bill to look back at his own past. As a result, it's revealed how truly awful Bill's transformation and surgery were, even though they enabled him to be a hero and save his people. While his friends and allies have spoken to the inner beauty and strength Bill possesses, Bill himself is unable to feel it, desperately desiring the means to revert and escape back to his former self as Stormbreaker once allowed him to do.

While Bill can't really be blamed, given the terrible nature of what was done to him, his inability to move on and accept himself for who he is could very well lead to disaster. Proving the point, while Beta Ray Bill found the Twilight Sword at the issue's end, Surtur himself arrived, as there was no way he was just going to let Bill walk away with his prized weapon. In fact, Surtur had actually been waiting and preparing for someone to try and claim his sword, wanting to duel someone in order to become worthy of the blade once more.

Now, Bill is going to have to fight Surtur himself, the same fire demon who threatened his people and forced him to become the cyborg he is today in the first place. Clearly, Beta Ray Bill's next battle is going to be extremely symbolic, and one would hope that he'll soon realize that he is a radiant being inside and out. In any case, here's hoping Thor's greatest ally doesn't kill himself in his efforts as the series continues.
