Superman Art Imagines Michael B. Jordan as Val-Zod | Screen Rant

A new piece of Superman fan art imagines Michael B. Jordan as Val-Zod. Following DC and Warner Bros.’ abandonment of the Snyder-Verse, the future of Kal-El is up in the air. Fans have waited for a solo follow-up to Man of Steel since 2013 and, now, it appears Henry Cavill has hung up his red cape (for the time being). There has been much talk of a J.J. Abrams-produced reboot of Superman starring an actor of color and written by Ta-Nehisi Coates. This led to the fan casting of Jordan as Superman.

Despite WB reportedly talking with Jordan about Superman projects since 2018, the actor downplayed rumors that he was attached to Abrams’ Bad Robot film. Turns out, this could be because Jordan and his production company Outlier Society are developing a limited series focusing on Val-Zod—a Black Kryptonian who adopts the mantle of Superman. A script is already being written and Jordan is considering starring as Val-Zod.

Artist Spdrmnkyxxiii recently posted some art to Instagram imagining Jordan as Val-Zod in HBO Max's upcoming limited series. This new piece sees Jordan sporting a Superman suit alongside an image of him doing his best Clark Kent impression. Check it out below:

Created by Taylor, Nicola Scott, and Robson Rocha, Val-Zod made his comics debut in 2014. He is the second character to take up the mantle of Superman in DC’s New 52 era, donning a mostly-blue suit with a white S. Val-Zod is a Kryptonian from Earth-2 who escaped his home planet with Kal-El and Kara Zor-El, his adoptive family. Val-Zod is ultimately taken in by pacifists and remains hidden until the Earth-2’s version of the Justice League, the Wonders, seek help to stop what they think is a brainwashed Superman—which is actually a clone of Superman made by Darkseid named Brutaal.

To clarify, Jordan’s limited series has presumably nothing to do with Abrams’ Superman reboot. That said, with both projects happening and Sasha Calle making her 2022 debut as Supergirl in The Flash, WB seems determined to move on from Cavill. While sharing some similarities with the ideology and origin of Kal-El, Val-Zod has a lot of potential for a unique live-action adaptation. It’ll be interesting to see if Jordan decides to play Val-Zod. As one of the busiest stars in Hollywood, his hesitation likely has to do with directorial duties on Creed III, among other things. However, now that a Val-Zod series has been announced with Jordan attached, it’s almost impossible to picture someone else in the role.
