Star Wars Rebels: 10 Unpopular Opinions About The Show (According To Reddit)

The television side of the Star Wars canon has been some of the best and most consistent content pumped out of the franchise in its forty-plus-year history. The Clone WarsRebelsResistance, and The Mandalorian all have aspects to adore, with Rebels being the first to prove Disney can make outstanding, emotional Star Wars shows.

For years, Rebels has been in the shadow of The Clone Wars and is, as a result, underappreciated by many, with those not watching the show missing out massively. There are many unpopular opinions surrounding the show from its audiences, something to which fans on Reddit can attest.

10 Holding Out Hope For Ezra's Death

Ezra Bridger may be the main protagonist of Rebels, but, similarly to Ahsoka Tano, early in the show, he was not the most beloved hero ever. Seen as childish and even annoying, it took a while before fans got fully behind Ezra and his arc.

They did, however, get behind him, and he grew into a great character. Redditor u/FN2184 commented on a comment naming Ezra as an annoying character by saying they sit and hope for his death in every episode. Ezra is a crucial part of Rebels and its growth into an outstanding piece of television, and his dying would definitely have hurt the show.

9 Sabine Only Becomes Interesting In The Last Few Episodes

Another character who wasn't immediately accepted by fans was Sabine Wren. One of the biggest reasons for this was how little fans knew about her and how lacking her development was. That changed as the show went on, and she became a pretty fascinating Mandalorian.

Redditor u/rocker2014 says they did not care for Sabine up until the final few episodes of the series. This is definitely unpopular considering how fantastic she is in episodes such as "Trial of the Darksaber" and how much she adds to the show when she does get some character exploration and time to show off her badassery.

8 There Are Too Many Lightsabers

Lightsabers are one of the constants in Star Wars, appearing in every medium, and a significant part of most TV shows, whether that be due to Jedi/Sith blades or the Darksaber. Not to stand out as an exception, Rebels has a good deal of lightsaber content.

Redditor u/wooltab believes there should not be so many lightsabers in Rebels. While this could be said for a show meant to be built around the rebellion, the lightsaber does not take away from the show whatsoever, with lightsabers being crucial for the likes of Kanan, Ahsoka vs. Vader, and Obi-Wan vs. Maul.

7 Obi-Wan Vs. Maul Is The Worst Duel Ever

Speaking of Obi-Wan vs. Maul, the latter became a terrific part of Rebels in season 2, with most of his time in the show seeing him focused on finding Obi-Wan Kenobi once more. Their final duel in "Twin Suns" is widely regarded as poetic brilliance.

Disagreeing with that, though, is Redditor u/DAVasquez- who names this the worst duel in Star Wars, believing Maul was proven more capable than this. Of course, what they fail to consider is how rundown and broken Maul is, surviving on hate alone as he traipses through the Tatooine desert. They believe it also ruins Obi-Wan vs. Vader on the Death Star, which certainly is not an opinion many Rebels fans hold.

6 Chopper> R2-D2

Every piece of on-screen Star Wars needs a good droid, from K-2SO to BB-8 to L3-37, all the way back to C-3PO and R2-D2. Rebels' resident droid is the uber-violent Chopper, a close friend of Hera.

Redditor u/naturalspacecat believes, quite simply, that Chopper is better than Artoo, albeit by very little. This is an opinion not many will have—not even the most hardcore of Rebels fans—with Artoo being so adored and important to Star Wars that he is believed to be the very best droid, even if people have other favorites.

5 Horrible Art Style

As commented on by ScreenRant, there is no doubt that Rebels has had its criticism for its animation being pretty childlike. However, most fans of the show agree the animation is gorgeous, providing so many incredible images.

Redditor u/KomradeKoala believes the art style is horrible, and it's to the point that they will not watch the show. Fans will agree that is their loss considering not only is the show fantastic, but it has so many gorgeous shots thanks to the animation and art style, even if some things like Yoda's design have let the showdown on occasion.

4 Season 1 Is Better Than Season 2

Most criticisms about the childish nature of Rebels and the new art style are mostly directed at season 1 of the show, which for the most part is the weakest season of the show. In most fan's opinions, that is.

Redditor u/luckjes112 disagrees, citing season 1 as being superior to season 2, believing most of season 2 felt rushed and pointless, whereas season 1 was more cohesive. With the story of Ahsoka and Vader, as well as the journeys of Kanan and Ezra especially, many believe season 2 is a great season of Rebels.

3 The Main Cast Is Boring & Uninspiring

Star Wars: Rebels has undoubtedly introduced fans to some of the best characters of the Disney era. The Ghost crew all have a role to play in the show's story, and some of them transcend beloved movie characters in their quality.

In terms of Rebels, Redditor u/plsgrier believes the main cast of Rebels is "painfully boring and uninspiring," believing the show gets worse the further it gets away from established characters like Ahsoka. As great as Ahsoka is, Kanan Jarrus' journey is one of the best in Star Wars, Hera Syndulla is an incredible rebel, and Ezra Bridger's growth is astounding, with the rest of the crew having fantastic moments and stories to shine.

2 The Writing Takes A Swan-Dive In Season 4

Season 4 of Rebels is the home of some of the show's most beloved episodes: "Family Reunion - and Farewell," "A Fools Hope," "Dume," and "A World Between Worlds."

Redditor u/Lord_Fireraven says they "abhor" the fourth season of the show, saying the writing took a swan dive. The season has been a little divisive purely because of "A World Between Worlds," but fans of the show generally love the final season, believing some of the character writing and story endings to be phenomenally crafted.

1 Rebels (& The Clone Wars) Far Better Than The Movies

Overall, as good as the animated shows are, most Star Wars fans will still prefer the movies to them. Even though there are clearly episodes and stories of Rebels better than most movies, not many would choose it over every Skywalker saga film.

Redditor u/The5Virtues believes both Rebels and The Clone Wars are the best parts of the Star Wars franchise, far better than any of the movies. This is undoubtedly unpopular in terms of the majority of Star Wars fans, but it is hard to argue given the high quality of so much of both shows.
