Loki: Renslayer’s Real Name & Comics Link Explained

Loki introduced Judge Renslayer, the head of the Time Variance Authority, and her real name and comics connection hint towards a bigger role in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ravonna Renslayer was the most loyal TVA employee. Tasked with ensuring the Sacred Timeline was not disrupted, Ravonna did whatever possible to capture Loki and Sylvie to prevent chaos in time. However, the season 1 finale of Loki revealed Renslayer’s true identity and it has a direct link to her comics counterpart.

While Loki and Sylvie ventured to the end of time and had a chat with He Who Remains — a scientist from the 31st century who (along with his variants) discovered and conquered the multiverse — Hunter B-15 headed to 2018 Ohio. This side adventure in Loki’s season finale revealed Ravonna Renslayer was previously a high school principal named Rebecca Tourminet, a variant who was kidnapped from Earth and had her memories erased by He Who Remains to work for the TVA. In the comics, Rebecca Tourminet is one of Ravonna Renslayer’s aliases, a name she assumed in 1903 in a bid to reconcile with Kang the Conqueror, the time-traveling villain Loki and Sylvie meet at the end of the Disney+ series and someone Ravonna had a romantic history with.

At the very least, Loki revealing Ravonna’s real identity suggests she will indeed have a direct connection to Kang in future MCU projects. First introduced in 1965’s Avengers #23, Ravonna was a princess in the 40th century whose father’s kingdom was under the rule of Kang. He was very much in love with her, but she obviously disliked him because he imprisoned her and tried to annex her kingdom. The two fluctuated between being lovers and enemies, with Ravonna ultimately time-traveling in a bid to destroy Kang for good. While the Loki version of Ravonna doesn’t seem to know her real identity just yet, she leaves the TVA in search of free will.

It’s possible this search is what leads her to formally meet Kang, whose many variants caused a multiversal war. Ravonna knows the only person who has free will is the “one in charge” and it’s possible she will find Kang precisely because she goes looking for that which she once believed evaded her. She wants revenge against Kang for taking that away, even if she doesn’t know he’s behind the TVA. He Who Remains revealed how dangerous his variants were and it could be he put Ravonna in charge of the TVA because he knew she would eventually leave to go after them when things turned dire. Ravonna is nothing if not a skilled hunter of variants.

With the official introduction of He Who Remains, one of many Kang variants, in the Loki season 1 finale, Ravonna’s presence in the TVA is far from a coincidence. With the reveal of her real name and comics connection to Kang, Ravonna’s role could become a lot more significant in the MCU. It’s already been confirmed Jonathan Majors will play Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and it’s possible Ravonna (be it as the TVA director or principal Rebecca) will appear alongside him. How she might factor into the film or Loki season 2 remains to be seen, but her story just got a whole lot more interesting.
