Director Scott Derrickson Teases New Horror Project With Story Details

Sinister co-writer/director Scott Derrickson has taken to Twitter to begin teasing a new horror project with a look at the screenplay's title page. After making his directorial debut on Hellraiser: Inferno, Derrickson rose to stardom in the horror genre co-writing and directing the true-story inspired The Exorcism of Emily Rose in 2005, which became a box office hit and an audience favorite. Initially moving away from the world of horror with the poorly received remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, he would return with 2012's Sinister at Blumhouse Productions, which received positive reviews and was a box office smash.

Though he would only co-write the sequel with original screenwriter C. Robert Cargill and leave directing to Ciaran Foy, he would return to the possession genre with 2014's Deliver Us From Evil, which received generally mixed-t0-negative reviews but was a box office success. Derrickson would move on to the blockbuster genre as co-writer and director for Doctor Strange for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and was set to write and direct its sequel with Cargill, though departed due to creative differences. Since then, he has set a number of future projects, including the Chris Evans-led action adventure Bermuda, a direct sequel to 1986's Labyrinth and an adaptation of Joe Hill's The Black Phone at Blumhouse.

Derrickson has taken to Twitter to share the exciting news with his followers that he is teaming with May The Devil Take You writer/director Timo Tjahjanto and frequent collaborator Cargill for a new project. Showing a look at the title page of the screenplay, Derrickson pulls a sneaky fast one by hiding part of the title and the film's time period. Check out Derrickson's announcement below:

Unfortunately for some, Derrickson and Tjahjanto's hiding of the film's title and setting does leave a lot of uncertainty about what the project entails, but the fact the trio are collaborating at all is enough to get fans excited. Between his May the Devil Take You films and work on the V/H/S franchise, Tjahjanto has quickly made himself a talent to watch in the horror genre for American audiences as much as those in his home country of Indonesia. It's even more interesting to see the filmmaker reference the seven-year journey taken to get the mystery project off the ground and his excitement at partnering with Cargill and Derrickson.

Though their departure from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is saddening to some, Derrickson and Cargill's future is still very bright. With The Black Phone seeing the duo also reunite with Ethan Hawke and producer Jason Blum teasing it as potentially the best movie from the director, his horror genre resume is looking to be expanding in exciting fashion. Only time will tell when the Joe Hill adaptation hits theaters on January 28, 2022.
