Arrowverse: 8 Romances No One Saw Coming | ScreenRant

The CW's Arrowverse is full of great love stories: Barry and Iris, Oliver and Felicity, Jefferson and Lynn... For the most part, fans could see these romances coming from a mile away, especially if the shows' love interests are based on dynamics from the comic books.

Occasionally, though, the writers surprise fans by putting two characters together that no one expected. Whether the pairings are short-lived or long-lasting, unexpected relationships can add a fun dynamic to the shows and keep fans on their toes.

8 Cupid & Deadshot

Carrie Cutter and Floyd Lawton, better known as Cupid and Deadshot, were members of Amanda Waller's Suicide Squad on Arrow. Cupid had an obsessive personality and fell in love with the Arrow after he rescued her. Her obsession with him led her to murder numerous criminals in order to get his attention, but she was arrested and sent to A.R.G.U.S. to be part of the Suicide Squad. While still maintaining her love for the Arrow, she was sent on a mission with Diggle, Lyla, and Floyd Lawton to rescue a Senator in Kasnia.

Her obsession shifted to Deadshot when he saved her from being shot and took a bullet for her, though Lawton did not return her romantic advances. When it became clear that the Squad had walked into a trap, Lawton chose to sacrifice himself so that Cupid, Diggle, Lyla, and the other hostages could get away safely. Cupid was heartbroken by his death and thereafter adopted his mantra that "love is a bullet to the brain."

7 Iris West & Eddie Thawne

Iris and Eddie's relationship developed rather quickly on The Flash, mostly due to the fact that fans were seeing it from Barry Allen's perspective. Eddie was introduced as Joe West's new partner in the pilot episode and Iris makes it clear that she is not impressed with "Detective Pretty Boy," but that she does find him attractive.

Barry is struck by lightning the night Iris meets Eddie night and wakes up nine months later from his coma to find that the two are now in a serious relationship. The most surprising thing about their relationship was that it lasted so long considering Barry and Iris were always meant to be together.

6 Ray Palmer & Kendra Saunders

Ray Palmer and Kendra Saunders were two original members of the Legends of Tomorrow. While Ray had had a string of difficult romances, Kendra travelled through time with her soulmate, Carter Hall. When Carter died and Kendra and Ray got stranded in the timeline, they developed a romantic relationship that eventually led to an engagement. This was a surprising development for Kendra, as she was literally fated to be with someone else in all of her lifetimes.

Kendra and Ray ultimately realized that it was unfair to Ray for him to be Carter's replacement, especially after the twist where they discovered another reincarnation of Kendra's love. Kendra left the Waverider with Carter's new incarnation at the end of season 1 and Ray eventually found his own soulmate in Nora Darhk.

5 Kara Danvers & William Dey

William was introduced in season 5 of Supergirl as a talented, self-assured reporter and coworker of Kara's. Kara was initially unfond and suspicious of William's behavior, but she warmed up to him and the two started working together when she saw beyond his confident exterior. It was somewhat obvious that William was introduced as a potential love interest for Kara, but the characters had nearly no visible chemistry.

Kara and William went on a handful of dates, but the relationship felt forced and unnecessary. It was surprising the writers continued to pursue it after it became clear that the two were not a suitable match. In the end, Kara ultimately repeated her mistake of trying to keep her super life and her romantic life separate, which stunted the relationship between the two. The pair will probably not be explored further in the show's final season.

4 James Olsen & Lena Luthor

This is another example of a relationship that fans might have seen coming, but were surprised to see develop given the lack of sustainable chemistry and common interests between the two characters. James Olsen and Lena Luthor were a strange pairing from the start. James had a history of mistrusting Luthors as Superman's best friend and Lena made many decisions that he disapproved of.

James never truly accepted Lena's approach to things and he lied to her for a long time about being Guardian. When he finally confessed, she accepted his decision to deceive her and pursue justice his own way, but he continued to doubt her motives for developing new technologies. Overall, it started with potential to help both characters grow, but it was not a healthy relationship for either of them.

3 Sara Lance & Nyssa al Ghul

Sara Lance was introduced on Arrow as the casual love interest of Oliver Queen in the pilot episode. She was presumed dead in the same shipwreck that stranded Oliver on Lian Yu, but to everyone's shock, resurfaced in Starling City during the second season. Sara revealed that she had been "rescued" and trained by the League of Assassins after leaving Lian Yu. Given her lingering chemistry with Oliver, everyone - including Oliver - was surprised to learn of her romantic history with Nyssa al Ghul.

Sara and Nyssa were in a relationship for most of her time in the League of Assassins. It ended when Nyssa released Sara from her commitment to the League but was rekindled when Sara returned to the League at the end of season 2. Sara's death in season 3 and later resurrection changed circumstances for the both of them and they never got back together, but for the remainder of the show Nyssa continued to refer to Sara as her "beloved."

2 Sara Lance & Leonard Snart

The attraction between Sara and Leonard Snart that developed in season 1 of Legends of Tomorrow caught many fans by surprise. One of the best parts of this relationship was that it developed organically based on the on-screen chemistry between the actors. Fans were guessing until the very end whether these two characters would actually get together.

In the season 1 finale, Sara delivers the fantastic line, "You wanna steal a kiss from me, Leonard? You better be one hell of a thief." But, later, Sara surprisingly kisses Leonard before he sacrifices himself for the team. This relationship would have been fun to explore further had it not been for Snart's untimely death.

1 Zari Tarazi & John Constantine

The Zari of the original timeline, Zari Tomaz, was dating Nate Heywood when she sacrificed herself for the Legends and her brother in season 4. Though Constantine started adventuring with the Legends in season 3, there was never any hint of romance between him and Zari 1.0. The new Zari 2.0 who joined the Legends in season 5 was almost the polar opposite of her old self and of Constantine.

Many fans expected Zari and Nate to eventually get back together, especially when Zari started to remember parts of her old life, but instead, an unusual attraction developed between Zari 2.0 and Constantine. The two are surprisingly supportive of and balancing for each other, making their dynamic an interesting and exciting one for season 6 of Legends to continue exploring, albeit an unexpected one.
