America’s Got Talent: Fan Poll Predicts When Show Will Be Canceled

America's Got Talent fans took to Reddit to vote in a poll asking when they think the show will end up getting canceled. The reality competition series is currently airing its 16th season with host Terry Crews and judges Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel. The auditions just came to a close this week, with the end of episode 8 showing the judges deliberating over which acts will move on to the live shows. The decisions haven't been revealed yet, so presumably viewers will have to wait until after the Olympics are over to find out who made it.

Throughout the current season of America's Got Talent, fans have shared their opinions online about the quality of the show lately. At one point, many expressed their frustration with the judges themselves, accusing the celebrities of advancing too many average acts and not being tough enough. Some fans said they want younger judges to freshen up the show. Other fans accused Cowell of violating the rules of AGT by cutting off auditions early when the buzzers are supposed to do that for them.

Now fans have taken to Reddit to vote in a poll that asks, "When do you predict this show is gonna die?" The options that fans can choose from are: "1-2 years," "3-4 years," "5-6 years," "Between 7 to 12 years" and "Never." With the poll on the verge of closing, the results are basically evenly split between two of the options, as of this writing. Currently, fans say America's Got Talent will either be canceled in three to four years, or never. The rest of the options are in a distant third, fourth and fifth place.

Below the poll, fans explained their reasons for voting the way they did and what they think the future of America's Got Talent will be. Some pointed to the fact that the ratings are still considered good in today's TV landscape, despite being much lower than when AGT was in its prime. One fan thinks there's a chance AGT could go the same way as American Idol by taking a break then being revived. Another fan said, "I think Howie and Simon will leave in the next 2-3 years and they will add 2 judges nobody likes and the show will die from adding bad judges and low ratings." "It'll die when some other show takes over the spotlight if ever," said someone else. Another fan pointed out that because America's Got Talent airs during the summer, it doesn't have much competition from other shows airing in the same timeslot.

Many of the Reddit users in this thread made some really good points, especially about the ratings. Yes, ratings for America's Got Talent are much lower than they used to be. But the truth is viewership is down across the board. So taking that into account, AGT is still doing fairly well. But if the ratings keep sliding to the point where it worries NBC, there's always a chance that Cowell could take steps to revamp the series in some way. Over the years, AGT's Cowell has made a lot of changes to The X Factor UK in an attempt to bring in more viewers. Currently, that show is on an indefinite hiatus. The same could happen to AGT, but then NBC would no longer have a big tentpole show to air in the summer.

It's actually not surprising that America's Got Talent fans on Reddit are divided over when or if the show will be canceled. Despite their criticisms, they acknowledge that AGT is the summer reality competition show. NBC and Cowell clearly have a great working relationship. And if there ends up being any truth to the "3-4 years" option in the Reddit poll, it will most likely have to do with some sort of AGT revamp (or even a hiatus) instead of an outright cancelation.

America's Got Talent airs Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8pm on NBC.
