All 5 Twilight Movies Made Netflix’s Top 10 Immediately After Debut
All 5 Twilight Saga movies cracked the Netflix Top 10 chart after their debuts on the streamer last Friday. The Twilight films famously launched the careers of both Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, now considered two of the best actors working today. While both veered away from blockbuster franchises, making a name for themselves in idiosyncratic indies, the Twilight films have followed them. The saga in question is based on the best selling novels written by Stephenie Meyer, of which there are four: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn, with the latter being split into two films.
All together, the five Twilight Saga films grossed $3.3 billion at the box office, becoming one of the most successful young adult franchises of all time. Stewart plays Bella Swan in the films, a high schooler that moves to the rainy Washington town of Forks. There, she meets Pattinson's Edward Cullen who she discovers is a vampire. Eventually, the pair go on to get married after facing their fair share of challenges, including a love triangle involving Taylor Lautner's Jacob (who happens to be a werewolf). The films were never well-received by critics, but that was always besides the point anyway.
Proving that its fans never cared about whether or not the Twilight movies were "good," each film immediately charted on Netflix's Top 10 after their debut last Friday. As of this writing, the first film occupies the third spot on the list behind only the new seasons of Virgin River and Never Have I Ever. New Moon sits at the sixth spot, with Eclipse and Breaking Dawn: Part 1 immediately following. Breaking Dawn: Part 2 sits at number ten.
Whether or not the Twilight movies are objectively "good" is entirely beside the point. Those who grew up watching the films hold them in high regard and they've experienced a reevaluation of sorts in recent years. This could be partly because of the fact that both Pattinson and Stewart have become critically acclaimed actors on their own. It's most certainly due, in part, to the fact that no one really takes them too seriously - Twilight is part absurdist romantic fantasy, part campy romp and looking at them through this lens makes them all the better.
How long the Twilight films remains in the Top 10 will be a testament to their staying power. Still, with the recent reassessment of the films, many have called for a reunion of sorts from the cast. While it may take a lot of money and a really good script to bring Pattinson and Stewart back to the franchise, there's certainly an audience out there for more of the Twilight Saga.
