What Resident Evil 9 Will Be Like (Thanks To RE Village)
Resident Evil Village builds upon the success of its predecessor Resident Evil 7, while also looking to past games like Resident Evil 4 to carve out an identity all its own. In many ways, Resident Evil Village feels like a greatest hits of the franchise, with each of the game's distinct areas offering a unique experience that seems inspired by portions of previous games in the series.
That is likely one reason behind Resident Evil Village's monumental success, having sold more than 4 million copies and becoming the first game in the series to break 100,000 concurrent players on Steam. To keep that momentum going, Resident Evil 9 will need to capture some of Resident Evil Village's essence while not being afraid to break away from franchise norms. After all, Resident Evil as a series is still going strong after more than 20 years thanks to Capcom's regular reinvention of the franchise.
Given Capcom's love for dramatically changing the series status quo every few games, the positive reception to Resident Evil Village, and certain plot points that occur towards the end of Capcom's latest, what might Resident Evil 9 look like? Will it be first-person? Will it focus more on action or more on horror? It's impossible to know for sure, but based on Resident Evil Village, here's what form Resident Evil 9 could take.
[WARNING: Spoilers for Resident Evil Village below]
For the two latest entries in the Resident Evil series (timeline-wise, at least), Capcom has opted for a first-person perspective. This served Resident Evil 7's return to true survival-horror well, and makes Resident Evil Village at times feel more like a shooting gallery. Might Resident Evil 9 dump the first-person camera and return to the franchise's more traditional third-person perspective? It could go either way, but Capcom seems to have developed a pattern that may indicate Resident Evil 9 has a good chance of being in first-person.
Every three games in the series, Capcom seems to reinvent the franchise. This happened with Resident Evil 1-3, which featured static camera angles and often times a more top-down perspective, only for Resident Evil 4 to completely reinvent the series as a over-the-shoulder shooter with horror elements. This continued for Resident Evil 5 and 6, only to change again with the arrival of Resident Evil 7 and the franchise's renewed focus on horror. It seems likely then that Resident Evil 9 will be the end of this new trilogy of games, and Capcom might want to keep it first-person, especially considering players can get third-person Resident Evil from the various remakes Capcom has been releasing steadily over the last few years.
As for what Resident Evil 9 might play like, it could take some interesting routes that would make it distinct from other games in the series. It will likely still feature all the elements fans are familiar with, and considering the more action-focused nature of Resident Evil Village, it's likely that trend would continue into the next sequel. But Resident Evil Village's final epilogue makes a surprising reveal as to who the franchise's next protagonist might be in the form of a grown-up Rose, and that carries with it all kinds of interesting possibilities.
Rose, as shown by being cut into pieces and put back together again over the course of the game's story, has special powers. While Resident Evil Village protagonist Ethan Winters did have regenerative powers that enabled him to survive a beating and keep on ticking, Rose seems to have that and then some, implying she has powers that nobody else yet knows about.
Villains from Resident Evil Village have a wide range of abilities ranging from Karl Heisenberg's metal-manipulation powers to Donna Beneviento's power to bring creepy dolls to life, so there is certainly room for Capcom to give Rose all kinds of cool and interesting powers to play with. Will that for sure happen if Rose does end up being the protagonist of Resident Evil 9? Maybe not, but it's certainly an interesting possibility, and an idea that would set the title apart from other first-person entries in the series.
Regardless of what form it ultimately takes, Resident Evil 9 is sure to be a unique entry in the franchise. Capcom's series live on its ability to continually shock and surprise players, and that's exactly what Resident Evil 9 needs to do as well to build off the success of Resident Evil Village.
