Superman Gets His Revenge With The Universe's Greatest Prank

Warning! Spoilers for Superman: Red and Blue #4 ahead!

A new story from Superman: Red and Blue #4 sees Superman exacting revenge on one of his greatest enemies with a prank of ultimate proportions. The Man of Tomorrow has been the target of numerous pranks from the troublesome Mister Mxyzptlk over the years. Now, Superman has turned the tables on their relationship with an epic prank of his own.

Mister Mxyzptlk has made a name for himself as one of Superman’s most bizarre foes. A trickster deity from the Fifth Dimension, Mxy's powers allow him to freely cross dimensions. The villain's power is so great that he not only holds a presence in the DC universe, but the Marvel universe as well. However, his usual M.O. is routinely visiting Superman’s home dimension to pester him with reality-bending pranks. The only way for Superman to send Mxy back to his own dimension is to get him to say his own name backwards, but even then, it’s only a matter of time before the villain returns to cause trouble once again.

In a short story from Superman: Red and Blue #4 titled “Namrepus,” written by Mark Waid with art by Audrey Mok, Superman flips the script on Mister Mxyzptlk’s antics. Somehow making his way into the Fifth Dimension, Superman reverses Mxy’s gimmick and starts terrorizing the trickster with his own set of wacky pranks. He burns Mxy’s dinner with his powerful heat vision, fills his entire house with whipped cream and even ruins his marriage proposal to his girlfriend by turning his can of prank peanut brittle into the real deal. By the end of the comic, Mxy is literally begging the hero to stop with his pranks.

Though Superman does eventually relent and reveal that he came to teach Mxy a lesson about using magic for the wrong reasons, it’s nothing short of cathartic to see the annoying trickster get a rightful taste of his own medicine. What’s more, it suggests that Superman might even be a more effective prankster than Mxy himself. Whereas Superman always eventually manages to defeat Mxy by getting him to say his own name backwards, the trickster is unsuccessful in his attempts to do the same to Superman, having failed to realize that his real name is Clark Kent. Superman voluntarily returns to his own dimension at the end of the comic, showing that even when the roles are reversed, he still comes out as the dominant force over his extradimensional nemesis.

“Namrepus” is an entertaining shakeup of the strange dynamic between Superman and Mxy. More than anything, it gives Superman a great opportunity to finally get revenge for all the times Mister Mxyzptlk wreaked havoc on Metropolis. The rivalry between these two characters may never end, but at least for this round, the hero has defeated the trickster once again.
