Cinderella Teaser Trailer Reveals First Footage From New 2021 Musical
A new teaser for Sony and Amazon's upcoming adaptation of Cinderella has been unveiled, revealing a first look at the upcoming film alongside a new poster. Pop star Camila Cabello will star as the titular princess in what will be her first major film role. Alongside Cabello, Cinderella's cast includes Billy Porter, Idina Menzel, Pierce Brosnan, Minnie Driver, John Mulaney, James Corden, and Missy Elliot. Kay Cannon, the director of Blockers, wrote the screenplay and directs the upcoming film which began development in April of 2019 as a musical version of the classic tale.
Instead of hitting theaters like originally planned, Cinderella will head straight to streaming, debuting on Amazon's Prime Video service this year. Previously, Cinderella was meant to debut in February 2021 before being pushed back to July. The uncertainty of the theatrical market prompted Sony to sell the film to Amazon in May. Because of these delays, little had been released from Cinderella save for a few first look images but now Amazon has given a first look at the upcoming film.
The streamer debuted a new teaser for the film on Twitter featuring Cabello and Porter, as well as a brief shot of Menzel as Cinderella's stepmother. The teaser also gives audiences a sneak peek at the music in the upcoming film before announcing Cinderella's release date as September 3. Cinderella can be seen in the teaser, presumably singing about going to the ball. When Porter's fairy godparent shows up and asks her if she wants to go to the ball, Cinderella says, "Yes, I was just singing and crying about it." Check out the teaser below:
In addition to the teaser, Amazon also released the first official poster for the film featuring Cabello in what could be her dress for the ball holding a sparkly high heel. Check out the one-sheet below:

Amazon describes Cinderella as "a new twist on a timeless classic" and that is evident from the teaser shown above. In addition to the musical elements of the movie, the star-studded casting and Porter's fabulous fairy godparent all indicate that the new version of Cinderella will update the classic tale. One of the more recent adaptations of Cinderella came out in 2015 via Disney and starred Lilly James and although it was a box office success, it flew relatively under the radar compared to the studio's other live-action adaptations.
Cabello's Cinderella looks to be sticking pretty close to the classic tale in terms of plot, though, and its success might hinge on how good the songs in the movie are. Cabello, Porter, and Menzel are all proven singers, with Menzel belting out "Let It Go" from Frozen and going down in history as one of the artists behind one of Disney's most popular original songs. Whether or not Cinderella rises to that level of ubiquity remains to be seen, but it's clear that Cabello's knack for pop hits combined with this classic tale has the potential to be a very good mixture.
