Fallout New Vegas Mod Adds Canceled Fallout 2 Sequel Van Buren

A fan-made mod for Fallout: New Vegas allows players to experience the canceled Fallout 2 sequel "Van Buren." The mod is advertised as being as faithful to the original Van Buren as possible. The mod is for PC and has several prerequisite mods necessary for running.

"Van Buren" was the internal code name for Black Isle's second attempt at creating Fallout 3. It was planned to take place in 2253 in the American southwest, specifically the states of Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and Colorado. The game would've had multiple endings depending on player actions and was intended to have three playable races. However, the title was scrapped completely in 2003. While some of the concepts for Van Buren would be recycled for Fallout: New Vegas, the true Fallout 3 wouldn't be released until 2008 by Bethesda.

The mod, called "Revelation Blues," is being developed by Odawgthecool on Nexus Mods. It is still a work in progress, but a playable demo is planned for release in the near future. Revelation Blues is being developed with the intent of following the Van Buren storyline as closely as possible. "Everything from the base game will be included in this remake," says Odawgthecool (via PC Gamer). They also hope to add more customized features as development progresses. However, New Vegas fans should be advised that Revolution Blues will treat New Vegas as non-canonical. The demo will show off the Tibbets Prison Facility and the player character's escape. Other mods will be required to run Revelation Blues, with a full list to be shared at a later date. The developer also encourages those interested to join the Discord server for more frequent updates.

This isn't the first attempt to revive the Van Buren concept Black Isles dropped. There exists a mod called "Fallout: Yesterday" for Fallout 2, available solely through the development team's Patreon. A standalone Unity engine title named "Project Van Buren" is also being worked on by Adam Lacko and a team of volunteers.

Still, the New Vegas mod is gaining the most attention, likely due to the game it's changing. New Vegas has an extremely active modding scene, with Nexus Mods hosting over 22,000 mods as of this writing. It is also the title with the most in common with the original Van Buren, at least in terms of setting and lore. It's still a work in progress, but one that has a great deal of ambition behind it. It may be a while before the conversion of Fallout: New Vegas is complete, but the chance to experience a canceled title is worth the patience.
