Dirt 5 Gets Crossplay Matchmaking & More In Major Update
Off-road racing title Dirt 5 is set to receive cross-platform online play in the game's next major update. The simulator is the latest release in the long-running Dirt series developed and published by Codemasters. The game includes a number of different game modes to test players' driving skills alongside a variety of different race locations such as Greece, South Africa and New York City.
Dirt 5 released back in November 202o, but the game has recently received a burst in popularity thanks to Xbox. Back in March the off-road racing game was made free for all Xbox Live subscribers, giving nearly all Xbox users a chance to take the game for a spin. While this free trial lasted only a few days, it did expose the title to players who may have otherwise never tried it. Dirt 5 has also been available as part of the Xbox Game Pass service for several months, as the game's developer has stated that this service has massively boosted the game's player count. Dirt 5 technical director David Springate revealed last month that when the game joined Xbox Game Pass, the amount of players rose very quickly.
Dirt 5 developer Codemasters has announced that a brand-new content update will include cross-platform matchmaking for the muddy racing title. The specific details of this cross-platform support have not been revealed, so it is unclear how the system will work and which platforms will be able to connect online. This free content update, referred to as the Redbull Revolution Update, will also include other features such as ghost lap times and new weather options for the game's Playground. The update is set to launch on May 11.
While perhaps a bit less renowned than action or first-person shooter games, racing games are a hugely popular genre in the video game industry. The genre is so popular that the Olympic Virtual Series, the first-ever Olympic category to focus entirely on digital e-sports, will include racing games as a category. Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo franchise will appear in the video game championship, representing the racing game genre as a whole.
Dirt 5 was successful at launch, and the game's popularity has only grown thanks to services such as Xbox Game Pass. The racing title's already solid player base will only improve with the addition of cross-platform play, which will unite all racers under one banner. While details of the feature have not yet been discussed, as face value this update should be an excellent edition to the dirty off-road racer.
Dirt 5 is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
