9 Best Quotes From Spiral: From The Book Of Saw | ScreenRant
For a horror series that’s been defined by its tortuous traps, the Saw movies are actually quite thought-provoking. This has usually been due to the excellent dialogue, which Spiral: From the Book of Saw has emulated as well. Overall, the Chris Rock-led movie has its own list of quotes that have much deeper interpretations below the surface.
Moreover, Spiral had many hints and references in the quotes to things like William Schenk’s status as the Jigsaw copycat along with the general theme of corruption in the movie. It’s impressive how the movie has a mixture of simple statements and more eloquent dialogue, all of which bring layers of characterization for the characters.
Note: This article contains spoilers for Spiral.
10 "Live Or Die. Make Your Choice."
This quote was a detail retained from the original series and is too iconic not to mention. It was said by the copycat at the end of every trap, although it’s notable that he sounds as if he’s taunting his victim rather than genuinely wishing them luck as Jigsaw had.
There’s also the fact that copying Jigsaw wouldn’t have been complete had Schenk not used this quote as it’s like the period at the end of a sentence and a trap just wouldn’t be complete without this statement.
9 "You Wanna Play Games, Mother*****r? Alright. I'll Play."
Samuel L. Jackson was an unexpected casting choice since A-list actors don't usually populate the Saw movies. However, Jackson brought his famous penchant for cursing forward and this quote is an instant hit for it.
It was a way to establish that Marcus Banks wasn’t a person who could be intimidated, unlike every other character that was shown cowering in fear at the prospect of being hunted by the copycat. While he did end up getting captured, Marcus' defiance was clear to see.
8 "Your Dad Is The Reason I Got Into This In The First Place."
On the face of it, this might seem like an unspectacular quote, but the beauty of it is that it’s the first hint given to viewers about Schenk’s true nature. Schenk told Zeke that everything he did was a result of his dad Marcus' work in the police force, which became a vital point by the end.
This was when it was revealed that it was due to Marcus’s corrupt cops that Schenk’s father was killed and he built his entire vendetta against the police force as a result. Going back to this quote, it was a clever way for the movie to reveal the villain without actually saying it.
7 "It Could Be Another Jigsaw Copycat."
Starting from Saw II, one thing that was always the same in every movie was that a Jigsaw apprentice would be involved. Spiral finally changed the series' route by making Schenk out to be a pure copycat who had nothing to do with Jigsaw.
However, the interesting thing about this quote is that it was a subtle way for the movie to make reference to the events of Jigsaw. That movie had shown Logan orchestrating a new game so that it appeared as if a copycat had done it, which is what Zeke was referring to in this quote.
6 "Whoever Did This Has Another Motive — Something Personal."
Zeke wasn’t taken seriously by others when Spiral began due to the lack of respect the cops had for him. Zeke had figured out that this wasn’t just any copycat on their hands and that the villain was actively targeting them due to a personal grudge.
The beauty of the scene is that Zeke said these words to Schenk, making it ironic how the only person that believed Zeke’s claim was the person behind the whole thing. It’s also a way for the movie to establish that Schenk is different from Jigsaw since the latter made sure that he didn’t have a personal antagonism toward his victims.
5 "Lock It Up! Nobody Gets Out Of This Precinct."
Saw victims have never been the sharpest tools in the shed, with the likes of Jeff Denlon and Daniel Rigg easily playing into the villain’s hand. Zeke Banks was a good subversion of this trope as he caught on to the copycat’s intentions.
To this end, Zeke had the good sense to isolate all the cops to the precinct since it would mean that the copycat wouldn’t be able to get his hands on a single person. Not to mention that the delivery of this line by Chris Rock set the mood for the climax to come.
4 "Can You Stand By The Sidelines While Justice Is Finally Served?"
Morality has been a recurring aspect in the Saw series, with several victims made out to be bad people who got their "just desserts" by being placed in the traps. Pete was the crooked cop whose brutality and subsequent firing due to Zeke led to the latter being ostracized by the police force.
Schenk caught Pete and placed him in a trap that required Zeke to choose if he wanted Pete to live or watch the man who ruined his career die. According to Schenk, justice would truly be served if Zeke didn’t act, which confirmed that the former had ditched the idea of legal justice and embraced his form of vigilantism.
3 "You're Too Close To This Thing, Zeke!"
Zeke was a far more empathetic character than most Saw protagonists, although this was almost his downfall. That’s because Zeke became too emotional when he lost his friends, leading him to get wrapped in his emotions.
He was called out for this by one of his rivals in the force and the movie made it appear as if Zeke might really be way in over his head. However, this quote set things up for what was to come as Zeke was indeed too close since his would-be friend Schenk was the killer and had captured Zeke’s father.

1 "John Kramer Was Right. The Spiral: A Symbol Of Change, Evolution, Progress."
This was Schenk telling Zeke during their climactic confrontation the reason why he had copied Jigsaw. Spiral acknowledged the connection with the original movies through the spiral symbol and Schenk’s interpretation of it was that Jigsaw had sought to usher in a time of change and progress.
However, the truth is that the quote shows how Jigsaw’s actions can be twisted in the worst ways since Schenk ignored the fact that Jigsaw wanted people to appreciate their lives. While the spiral symbol did spark change, it was an evolution that brought out the worst in people like Schenk.
