Spring Baking Championship: Why Laurent Shouldn't Have Been Eliminated

Laurent Carratie of Spring Baking Championship fame was eliminated from the 2021 season and many fans think that he was cut from the show too soon. It seemed like an unfair decision, given that it was a choice between taste and texture. Laurent's main heat dessert was fully cooked but had a dense texture that didn't measure up. However, he technically fulfilled the challenge requirements. It could be argued that he just had a bit of bad luck.

In previous seasons of Spring Baking Championship, when it came to deciding who would be sent home, taste and cooking quality took priority over presentation. That being said, if the judges aren't fans of a certain baker, they probably won't win. This is standard for other shows as well. For example, on Nailed It!epic fails always get special attention. The first contestant eliminated in Spring Baking Championship season one had served raw Hummingbird cake to the judges. Nancy asked him to take a bite. He was quite embarrassed to find out that he hadn't cooked his cake properly. For 2021, it seems like bakers can serve raw pastry to judges, or baked goods that don't taste good, and still survive in the competition.

Laurent and the other bakers had to make "hot cross bunnies" i.e. Easter bunnies crafted from bun dough and dried fruit. He took a risk by making a dough from a hometown recipe. The judges noted that his baking tasted good. The issue was the texture, as his bunny was dense because his dough hadn't risen properly. Chiantae was also in the bottom two, owing to the fact that her bread was raw or underbaked in some spots. She hadn't put her bunnies in the oven for long enough. Chiantae has acknowledged that being in the bottom two was quite a wake-up call. She upped her game in later episodes.

It does seem a little bit unfair. Laurent took a risk in this addictive baking competition and wanted to infuse a bit of his personality into the challenge. He extolled the values that Spring Baking Championship represents. The same thing happened to Jamal. He got eliminated when his bear cookie sandwiches wouldn't stick to his plastic tower during a baby shower-themed main heat. While the judges said that Jamal made one of the best desserts of the day, they had to eliminate him for an "epic fail," as Duff tactfully put it after tasting his cookies. This is despite the fact that one contestant failed to put much coffee (the twist ingredient) into her pastry. Another added too much, to the point that the judges said they were instantly wired. Jamal made a showstopping dessert and failed in terms of presentation. He took it well, but it seemed unfair.

In an ideal world, there would be a reality show competition where no one is eliminated, and everyone ranks differently until they reach the finale. Appearing on these shows boosts the careers of cast members, and the positivity of no eliminations until the final episode would improve the experience. When Laurent left Spring Baking Championship (which is moving to Discovery+), he did so in a dignified way. At least he tried something different.
