Capcom Beta Testing Unannounced Resident Evil Multiplayer Game
Capcom has opened registration for closed beta testing, involving a mysterious Resident Evil multiplayer game. This news comes on the heels of the publisher's announcement that a Resident Evil Showcase is scheduled for January 21 at 2:00pm PST. During the digital event, viewers will get a look at a new trailer and first-look gameplay footage for the franchise's next mainline entry, Resident Evil Village. It's now evident that at least cursory details about a new online-centric title will also surface during next week's showcase.
The RE development team at Capcom most recently dabbled with multiplayer in Resident Evil 3's remake. Titled Resident Evil Resistance, the online offering boasted 4v1 asymmetrical gameplay, wherein four Survivors were pitted against one Mastermind. The Survivor characters were made specifically for Resistance, but post-launch DLC brought fan-favorite Jill Valentine into the mix. On the other hand, the Mastermind figures were predominately franchise staples, such as Alex Wesker and Annette Birkin. All in all, Resistance seemed an inventive idea that failed to stick the landing. But maybe Capcom will have better luck in the near future.
Resident Evil's official website presently has applications open for fans interested in joining closed beta testing for an unannounced multiplayer title. According to the site, the testing serves as one way of celebrating the "25th anniversary of Resident Evil." Registration closes on January 25 at 6:59am PST. While only PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the beta will be available, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S users can expect to gain access via backward compatibility. There are a few qualifications for joining the beta. Applicants must be 18 or older and possess a Capcom ID that's linked to the Resident Evil Ambassador program. Selected participants will have the option of joining the beta during a range of times on January 28 and January 29. Fans interested in more details should tune into the Resident Evil Showcase next Thursday.
The mystery online experience could be one of the projects mentioned in the recent Capcom leaks. For instance, details from last fall's data breach suggest the publisher plans to launch something known as Resident Evil Outrage in the fourth quarter of this year. Admittedly, Outrage doesn't sound like a bad title for an online Resident Evil experience.
Whether or not the mystery multiplayer offering is somehow tied to Resident Evil Village currently remains to be seen. After all, the RE3 remake and RE: Resistance were a packaged deal. That the multiplayer's closed beta will only involve last-gen versions of the experience indicates a bundle may not be in the cards, however; after all, as of writing, Capcom has only confirmed RE Village for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series.
