Cyberpunk 2077's Tarot Cards Explained | Screen Rant

Cyberpunk 2077 has a unique collectible for players to find throughout the world map. Depictions of the tarot, a deck of playing cards showcasing abstract characters and symbols, are littered throughout Night City. They hold a secret meaning about Cyberpunk 2077's story, but the truth they hide is up to players to find.

The tarot is a deck of playing cards originating from medieval Europe. Traditionally, the deck is used as a pack of playing cards for a variety of games. Like regular cards, a tarot deck has suits and numbers that determine the rules of the game in question. However, the suits on a tarot are different than the average deck of cards. The 22 suits of the tarot, known as the major arcana, depict characters and locations that each bear a symbolic meaning. Together, they can be used to tell a story. As a result, tarot cards have often been used for fortune telling.

From the beginning of Cyberpunk 2077, players are free to visit Misty's Esoterica, a fortune-telling shop set up in front of V's favorite ripperdoc, Viktor. At no charge, players can have Misty read V's fortune using the tarot deck that Jackie purchased for her. According to the Fandom Cyberpunk 2077 Wiki, depending on where the player is in their story and what decisions they have made, Misty's tarot reading will give them clues about the future. At the end of the game, V will have Misty give one last tarot reading that symbolizes which of the game's multiple endings the player will receive.

However, that is not all there is to Cyberpunk's tarot obsession. After main story mission "The Heist," graffiti of the tarot cards will begin appearing at certain places around Night City. Looking at one and talking to Misty will begin the "The Fool On The Hill" quest. This sends the player to find 20 of the 22 major arcana posted around the game's world. The design of each tarot they inspect will be saved for them, along with a description detailing its meaning. Once the player finds all 20, they can return to Misty's shop. She'll explain the last two cards will only be revealed to V at a crucial point in their journey, where V must make an important story decision.

These last two cards appear near the end of the game and essentially have to do with whether or not V chooses to side with Arasaka. Should V resist and go after Arasaka, they will find the "Judgement" card. Should V comply with Arasaka, they will encounter the "Devil" card. The Devil card is the only card in the game that comes with no description, but considering Judgement is associated with concepts like "renewal" and "self-worth," it can be assumed that these two cards indicate whether or not V and Johnny get a bad ending.

Cyberpunk 2077's tarot cards are equally important and unimportant to the game's storyline. While the player is in no way obligated to search for, interpret, or even think about the tarot, it is still an invitation from the game's writers to consider the game's story more symbolically. Perhaps this could even lead players to replay the game in a new way in order to find out the different kinds of tarot readings they can obtain. Regardless, Cyberpunk 2077's tarot cards are a fun way for CD Projekt Red to include some unconventional, medieval art and references in a conflictingly futuristic setting.
