Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night Announces Upcoming Classic Mode Update

The developers of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night have announced that the next free update coming for players will be the game's Classic Mode. Originally funded on Kickstarter, Koji Igarashi's self-described return to the "Igavania" promised a multitude of free updates following its release in 2019. There has been a good clip of updates, including the recent edition of Bloodless as a playable character last month. Other 2020 additions have included a color wheel for character customization, a randomizer for players who want to play over and over, and a Boss Revenge mode with four playable boss characters.

As far as 2021 goes, there are two more alternate modes that are sure to keep players coming back to the spooky halls of Bloodstained. The game's VS mode is not a traditional one on one fighting experience. Instead, players both local and online can match up in a survival environment and then damage each other indirectly as they roam the castle. Despite the name, the Chaos Mode is more straightforward. It's a boss rush with randomized pickups and subgoals to grab more equipment. Both of these new ways to play are currently planned for the first half of the new year.

Classic Mode will also be released soon, but it will be in the first month of the new year. Announced to be coming in January via a tweet this past week, Classic Mode brings Bloodstained back to the 1980s, where the franchise's inspiration was a 2D action game rather than an exploratory castle crawler. Players will charge in as Miriam through five levels of demons on a linear 2D path, challenging bosses along the way. There are three difficulty levels to choose from, which will be needed if the mode lives up to its retro gaming inspirations.

Of course, this isn't the only time that the Bloodstained franchise has gone back to the roots of Castlevania. The fine folks at Inti Creates have crafted two 2D sprite-based renditions of Bloodstained as companion pieces to the full-fledged Metroidvania. Both Curse of the Moon and Curse of the Moon 2 feature elements from the main game transposed into an NES-style sidescroller. Both games have support for single-player and two-player co-op, and the second game has a story credit from Koji Igarashi himself. This spinoff series has received praise from players and critics for how well they capture the old-school vibe, even if the franchise is practically brand new.

Even when it's rooted in the past, the new series started with the funding of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has proven to be a great new entry into the gaming lexicon. While it's a shame that Konami only seems interested in the past games and future media of their own Castlevania franchise, it's good to know that the creator behind so many of its highlights can still create games that the fans love. It's the one great thing about the proliferation of so many games in the last decade. There truly is something for everyone out there in the gaming marketplace.
