Batman Reveals Why His New Villain is Named Ghost-Maker

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Batman #103

In the latest issue of DC Comics' current Batman series, the Dark Knight is still trying to adjust to the new status quo after Joker War when an old rival comes to Gotham: The Ghost-Maker. This is significant, as Batman and this new dark crimefighter had apparently made a deal years ago that they would stay out of each other's way, with Ghost-Maker promising to not step foot in Gotham City. However, things have obviously changed. The Ghost-Maker believes that Batman has failed Gotham, and that he could do a better job. It's also revealed in this issue why Ghost-Maker chose his name, and it's not just due to his lethal methods while seeking justice.

It was shown in previous issues that Bruce Wayne and Ghost-Maker were training at the same time in their youth to become the men they are now. As a result, Batman and Ghost-Maker became rivals after Ghost-Maker killed one of their shared masters. Ghost-Maker saw their training as a game and competition, doing everything he could to excel and be better than Bruce, even finding new mentors and teachers before Bruce could get to them. However, Batman was apparently always the better fighter in their youth, and has no problem fighting Ghost-Maker in the present.

Now, in Batman #103 from James Tynion IV, Carlo Pagulayan, Danny Miki, and Guillem March, Ghost-Maker is trying to kill the Clownhunter, the young kid who decided to track down and kill Joker's goons in the aftermath of Joker War. As Batman fights Ghost-Maker to keep him from killing the troubled new kid on the block, Oracle is in Batman's ear, incredibly confused as to why she can't see or properly hear whoever it is that Batman is fighting.

Apparently, Ghost-Maker has quite the extensive network of technology known as his Ghost-Net, enabling him to be completely invisible digitally, keeping him off of anyone's radar (like a ghost). In this technological day and age, that's certainly a powerful tool to have. Not only that, his networks can completely destroy and corrupt any other tech that even tries to identify him. While Batman apparently made fun of Ghost-Maker's name in their youth, it seems as though his old rival has found the means to earn the name, not to mention the fact that he seems to have no problem killing criminals and turning them into ghosts like his name further suggests.

In any case, Ghost-Maker seems determined to prove that he can do a better job protecting Gotham than Batman has, hence his breach of their deal by entering the city. At the end of the issue, Ghost-Maker manages to knock Batman out with a tranquilizer, planning to "take Bruce off the field" in order to show the city what it could be with a "real crimefighter in charge." Here's hoping Batman will be able to stop Ghost-Maker before he can do too much damage in Gotham.
