Wonder Woman: 10 Actors Who Were Considered To Be Princess Diana
Wonder Woman is one of the most iconic superheroes in popular culture but she's only had a few actresses play her on film and television. It wasn't until the DCEU emerged in recent years that she finally made it to the silver screen. Many actresses almost played the role Gal Gadot ultimately won and has performed to great acclaim.
Many others almost played the character of Princess Diana in other film and television projects that never got off the ground. Some of them have actually played Diana, but no one has yet to see the results.
10 Adrienne Palicki
Adrianne Palicki is one of the few people to ever play Wonder Woman on screen. She's also the only actress that no one has ever seen doing so. Palicki played the role of Diana in an ill-fated pilot for a potential television series from 2011. Pictures from the shoot have surfaced online, showing her one of the less successful versions of the Wonder Woman costume. She would have made for an interesting Diana though, as her work on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Mockingbird later proved.
9 Angelina Jolie
In 2005, Joss Whedon signed on to write and direct a Wonder Woman movie (the script has since turned up online). His first choice to play the role was Angelina Jolie. Jolie would have been a natural choice at the time. She definitely looks the part of Diana. She also had plenty of action movie chops thanks to the Tomb Raider movies. Whedon later got his chance to work with Wonder Woman in the maligned 2017 Justice League movie, which had a lot of behind the scenes issues.
8 Sarah Michelle Gellar
Sarah Michelle Gellar likely made sense at one point to play Wonder Woman. She was definitely kind of a superhero in the iconic series Buffy The Vampire Slayer. She also had some pull with Joss Whedon. As Whedon's 2005 attempt came together, Gellar was said to be in the running for the lead role. His film never got off the ground and she never got an opportunity to play Diana, on film anyway. She did cosplay as the character at the 2002 MTV Movie Awards.
7 Megan Fox
Many fans likely don't regret this near-miss. Megan Fox was rumored to play Princess Diana as early versions of a Justice League were floated in the early 2000s. She was very popular at the time, coming off of the Transformers franchise, but she basically eliminated herself from consideration.
Fox described the Wonder Woman character as 'lame,' saying "I just don’t get it. Somebody has a big challenge on their hands whoever takes that role, but I don’t want to do it.” She might have regretted saying that later. She ended up regretting her Transformers role as well.
6 Gina Carano
Gina Carano made a lot of sense for the DCEU Wonder Woman from the standpoint of pure physicality. The former MMA star had the physique for the part down (and the amazing dark hair) but voiced her wish to play Diana. Ultimately didn't get the role. Carano probably doesn't smart too much over not getting the part. She's since gone on to become a major part of The Mandalorian as the ex-Rebel shock trooper Cara Dune. She's tough and reliable but hard to say if she's likable yet.
5 Megan Gale
Adrianne Palicki isn't the only woman to sign on for Wonder Woman and not get to play her (or at least be seen). Megan Gale signed on to play the character in the almost-made Justice League: Mortal by George Miller in 2007. Costume tests were done with the entire cast in their outfits (which also included Armie Hammer as Batman) and later on, Gale did a famous photoshoot as Wonder Woman that shows how apt she was for the part. She definitely has a Lynda Carter quality about her.
4 Jessica Biel
Wonder Woman had a few close misses with the big screen before finally breaking through in 2016. As early ideas for a Justice League movie came together in the 2000s, one actress that got mentioned a lot was Jessica Biel. Biel would have fit the mold at the time, and had experience in the superhero movie world, playing Whistler's daughter in Blade: Trinity alongside the ubiquitous superhero actor Ryan Reynolds. Those Justice League concepts never came together and Biel never got her shot at the role of Princess Diana.
3 Elodie Yung
One of the finalists for the role of Wonder Woman in the DCEU was the French actress Elodie Yung. She is likely best known for her role in the Marvel universe. Yung played assassin Elektra Natchios in the Netflix streaming series Daredevil, one of the best Marvel television series of the MCU era.
Yung brought an electric quality and cat-like physicality to the role of Elektra and it's easy to see why she would have been a natural fit for the part of Wonder Woman.
2 Jamie Alexander
Jamie Alexander was in the early running for the role. She definitely looks the part and got plenty of experience in the superhero realm playing Lady Sif in the first two MCU Thor movies (she's currently MIA). Alexander's contract with Marvel seems to have been a barrier to any hope of playing Wonder Woman. Like most if not all actors and actresses in the MCU, she is contracted for multiple films whether she does them or not. This foreclosed any hope of Wonder Woman as casting picked up in 2013 and 2014 for Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
1 Olga Kurylenko
Olga Kurylenko came very close to playing the role. The actress eventually conceded that was in the top three under consideration for the part after Gal Gadot had been cast. It's easy to see why the French-Ukrainian actress would have been considered. She's definitely got the acting and action chops, having appeared in numerous films including Quantum of Solace (maybe not the best of the James Bond films). She also is close in appearance to Gadot and Diana herself. Kurylenko would have made an excellent Wonder Woman.
