What makes a hammy performance a GOOD hammy performance?

Actors who chew the scenery and go HUGE for comedic effect are often grating. Jim Carry, Chris Farley, Mr Bean - definitely gifted - but not everyone enjoys those performaces. But Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future is universally beloved. Or Alan Rickman in Robin Hood. About half the cast of The Princess Bride. Madeline Kahn in anything. Is it there something about those performances that they pull off that most actors can't -how do they do it? Or is it good writing? Or is it all just camp? I am not getting into hammy drama (Al Pacino, Nic Cage). I think that's separate. [link] [comments] |
