I Saw the New Spongebob Movie

In short, it's pretty good.

The film opened in Canada yesterday and I went to see it with my brother. We both felt about the same about it. The animation is quite good even if a departure from the original series, with a nice hand-crafted aesthetic. The music was a nice mix of the stock music used in the series and some new compositions that don't sound out of place, with the odd pop/original song thrown in. There are 2 musical numbers as well.

The story is very paint by numbers, treading familiar ground. Basically a mix of a couple of old Spongebob episodes, the first movie, and the UkinoJoe "We Gotta Get Spongebob Back" sketch. It does the trick but isn't anything too special.

That said, there is a great dream sequence with insane cameos and Keanu, and it was super funny. Keanu is also in the movie far more than expected, probably 10 minutes at least, which was a nice suprised.

For those concerned due to Tim Hill, fear not, this is easily his best film to date and a mostly respectful tribute to the series, but the Camp Coral stuff really harms the pacing and retcons much of the original series (Help Wanted and Sandy's introduction episode from what I remember) which might get on pursists' nerves. They have a nice little tribute to Hillenburg at the end at least, but I don't know how he would feel about it.

Still plenty of trippy moments and adult humour with some really funny jokes here and there. Overall, it's not a bad way to spend a day at the cinema if you are in Canada, and is probably worth a watch on Netflix or CBS when it comes out elsewhere. It's not too long and there's enough to enjoy for kids and fans.

7/10
