Seinfeld: 10 Reasons Elaine & George Would Have Been The Perfect Couple

Seinfeld is without question one of the hallmark TV series of the 1990s. Even now, over 20 years after it went off the air, it continues to exert a powerful hold on the pop-cultural imagination. Given the larger-than-life and ridiculous nature of the characters, it’s always fun to speculate what it would have been like if, for example, George and Elaine had become a couple.

Though they are opposites in almost every way, there are some pretty compelling reasons to think they would have made the perfect couple.

If Elaine has a contentious relationship with George, the same can be said of her interactions with his father, Frank. At one point, Frank even called her “supercilious” and, while that may not seem too offensive to some, Frank makes it quite clear with his tone what he thinks of Elaine and her snobby ways.

If Elaine and George were a couple, it would have meant seeing the two of them spar with one another even more.

9 We’d Get To See Elaine And Estelle Go At It

In the entire run of Seinfeld, two women emerge as the strongest influences in George’s life: Elaine and his shrill, domineering mother Estelle. If George and Elaine had ever gotten together, it would have been hilarious to watch Elaine go at it with Estelle, each of them contending to be the dominant force in George’s life.

It’s hard to say who would win such a contest, but it’s safe to say that each of these fiery women would have been able to hold their own.

8 Elaine Would Have Reined In George’s Worst Impulses

Although it’s pretty inarguable that all four of the main characters are pretty bad people, Elaine probably has at least marginally more sense than either George or Kramer.

As a result, if she’d gotten together with George -- and they managed not to kill one another after the first date -- it’s very likely that she would have been able to rein in George’s worst and most self-destructive impulses. Or, at the very least, she would have tried.

7 It Would Have Driven Jerry Crazy

Definitely one of the most compelling reasons why George and Elaine would have made the perfect couple is that it would have driven Jerry absolutely crazy to see the two of them together, particularly if they’d managed to be happy.

We all know that Jerry has just a bit of an ego, and it would have caused him many hours of agony to think about what it was about George that made him compelling to Elaine. The monologue almost writes itself!

6 Elaine Would Have Made George A Better Person

In addition to reining in George’s worst impulses, it’s likely -- or at least possible -- that Elaine would have helped George to become a better person. We all know that George has issues with holding down a job or, to be honest, doing anything that would make him a fully functioning human and mature adult.

You can’t help but think that Elaine, perhaps more than any other woman he was with, would have lifted him up, if only to try to impress her.

5 Their Dueling Egos Would Have Been Hilarious To Watch

One of the funniest things about Seinfeld is the way in which the characters seem utterly, blissfully unaware of just how annoying, exasperating, and egotistical they are. That is definitely true of both George and Elaine, who seem to float through the world without even a trace of self-awareness.

One can just imagine, then, how this would have manifested in their relationship, and the fireworks caused by their dueling egos would have been worth watching in itself.

4 Their Bad Qualities Would Have Canceled Each Other Out

Sometimes, each part of a couple brings some strength to the table, each of them complementing the other. In other cases, each partner is so bad that each one cancels the other out.

This would most likely have been the case had George and Elaine got together, as each of them could be, to put things mildly, incredibly unpleasant. It would have been quite fun to see how their negative characteristics would have negated one another.

3 They’re Shallow Enough For Each Other

One of the key things that kept both George and Elaine from staying in any sort of long term relationship is their inability to overcome their fundamentally shallow natures. Remember that time Elaine wasn’t sure how long she had to stay in a relationship with a guy whose face was damaged?

Their mutual shallowness would have allowed them to perhaps see the things that they liked in one another, rather than always dwelling on the negative.

2 They Sometimes Work Well Together

A fascinating thing about George and Elaine is that, despite their conflicting personalities, there are actually times that they work well together, such as the time that Elaine tried to help George get his job back (though admittedly the results were, shall we say, mixed).

This suggests that, beneath the surface, they actually have a lot in common with one another, enough so that, just perhaps, they might have made the perfect couple.

1 Elaine Might Have Made George Smarter

Say what you will about Elaine but she, along with Jerry, is a genuinely smart person. There’s reason to think that, had she gotten together with George, she would have helped him tap into some of his potential, making him smarter in the process.

Perhaps he, faced with the fact that he’s dating someone quite far above him in intellect, would have at least pretended to be smart to gain her affection. At the very least, she would have helped him to refine his film taste.
