Rio Bravo (1959) vs. El Dorado (1966)

Anyone who's seen both, would love to know your takes, since the latter is kind of a remake. It's been a while since I saw *Rio Bravo*, but I think the script was probably a little tighter. *El Dorado* has a lot of back and forths that are allllmost clever, but not quite. And James Caan as a cowboy named Mississippi is on its own hilarious.

BUT. I love Robert Mitchum and don't have much of a relationship with Dean Martin, so the idea of seeing him on screen with John Wayne made the whole watch worth the price of admission.

Also, more generally, does anyone else think Howard Hawks just kinda... got John Wayne? He's such an interesting figure. Not a *good* actor in the way we tend to evaluate acting today, but in particular his roles in Howard Hawks's movies just seemed to always work. He seemed like a guy placed perfectly in that world, vs. when I've seen him in John Ford's movies he just doesn't seem to click the same way. Anyway, maybe I just have to revisit The Searchers.
