Buffy the Vampire Slayer Star Wears Season 1 Finale Outfit 23 Years Later

Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar looks ready to stake the Master, wearing an outfit from the show’s season 1 finale 23 years later. Regarded by many fans and pop culture historians alike to be one of the greatest and most influential series of all time, Buffy would often go all out for its season finales. This is most evident in “The Gift,” the emotional season 5 finale where the title character sacrificed herself to save the world (again). But any of Buffy’s season-enders, even the magnificently bewildering season 4 closer “Restless,” could stand on their own if the show wasn’t picked up for another run.

The formula was initially used in the season 1 finale “Prophecy Girl.” In the episode, Buffy faces her toughest challenge and learns that she’s likely to die at the hands of the Master. The revelation leads to several emotional scenes for a show that would go on to feature plenty. Buffy ultimately survives the encounter, thanks to help from her friends. By the end of the episode, she’s even rejuvenated by her brief experience. The finale helped cement the tone creator Joss Whedon intended the show to have, with one of the key ideas being that Buffy survives thanks to support from the Scooby Gang.

“Prophecy Girl” is also remembered, however, for one of Buffy’s iconic looks. Sarah Michelle Gellar, who portrayed Buffy Summers, took to Instagram in an outfit from “Prophecy Girl.” Rather than being uncertain and afraid, this version of Buffy looks rather unimpressed with the Master. Check out Gellar’s post, which includes a quote from the season 1 finale, below.

News emerged in 2018 that a reboot of Buffy was in the works. Since then, however, there have not been many updates on the project. The original, while flawed, with several storylines that haven’t stood the test of time, is absolutely a classic. It launched Whedon into a household name, paving the way for him to direct The Avengers. It’s also Gellar’s most important on-screen role by her own admission, giving fans a female protagonist that was far from one dimensional at a time when that was still a rarity.

Gellar recognizes the impact of Buffy the Vampire Slayer as well, occasionally sharing rare photos of the landmark series on social media. We certainly wouldn’t mind if the actress made a habit of updating some of her other memorable looks from back in the 1990s. Chances are, she’d still slay.
