SpongeBob SquarePants: Sandy's Twin Explained (& Why They Don't Appear)

The main characters in SpongeBob SquarePants have families, but they don’t appear often. In Sandy Cheeks’ case, for example, it’s even harder for them to appear as she’s a squirrel living in the bottom of the sea, but they have been mentioned and/or shown a few times, including her twin brother. SpongeBob SquarePants debuted on Nickelodeon in 1999 and has become not only the most successful Nicktoon to date but also one of the longest-running American animated series, and has also branched out to other media, most notably film and video games.

SpongeBob SquarePants follows the daily adventures of the title character and his best friends and enemies from Bikini Bottom, among those Patrick Star, Sandy Cheeks, Squidward Tentacles, and Mr. Krabs. With over 10 seasons and counting, viewers have truly gotten to know the main characters and their backstories, though some still keep a dose of mystery, such as Sandy’s. Families like those of SpongeBob and Patrick have appeared a couple of times, but as Sandy comes from the surface, having her family visiting can be complicated.

Still, the series has either shown or mentioned Sandy’s family members, and some have only appeared in other media, mostly books. Something not many might know or remember is that Sandy has a twin – and here’s what you need to know about them.

The Cheeks family is formed by Grandpa, Pa (who appears in the book Hooray for Dads and in a photo in the episode “Surf N’ Turf”), Ma (also appears in a photo in the aforementioned episode), Rosy (Sandy’s sister who appears in “Sandy’s Nutty Nieces”) and her daughters Macadamia, Hazelnut, and Pistachio, and Randy, Sandy’s twin brother. Sandy is the only one who lives underwater, and Randy is still living in Texas and working in a rodeo. As they are twins, they share a connection and all of their abilities, meaning that Randy can do everything she can, especially playing karate and – of course – they have an exceptional talent for rodeos.

Randy has only been mentioned in one episode, “Rodeo Daze”, where Sandy received a letter from him telling her that the rodeo was in town and she had to go to Texas to defend her title. Though she went to Texas to try to keep her winning streak, Randy didn’t appear. It’s unknown if Randy Cheeks will ever make an appearance in SpongeBob SquarePants (whether the TV show, a video game, or a film) but there’s hope he will as the franchise is still going, and there can be a place for Randy to make his debut – more so when taking into account that other family members have already appeared, such as his nieces.
