The ninth and final season of the hit teen drama on The CW network, One Tree Hill, is packed full of drama. James Lafferty, who plays Nathan Scott, goes from being a series regular to a recurring character when Nathan is kidnapped and held for ransom. A few old series regulars return as guest stars.
Chad Michael Murray comes back as Lucas Scott for an episode, and both Barbara Alyn Woods and Craig Sheffer reprise their roles as Deb and Keith, respectively. When the series announced that this season would be the final, it saw a rise in viewership with fans tuning in every week to say goodbye to their favorite characters from the last nine years.
10 Every Breath Is A Bomb (8.4)
At this point in the season, Nathan has been missing for a while and both Hayley and Dan are on a mission to find him. Dan gets a lead from a drug dealer in town who may know the guy who is holding Nathan hostage, Dmitri.
Chase finds himself in a bit of trouble of his own when he discovers Chuck's father has been hitting Chuck and he confronts the dad, getting in a physical altercation with the man and later arrested.
9 Don't You Want To Share The Guilt? (8.6)
Brooke and Julian's marriage hangs in the balance after Julian makes a big mistake. Julian accidentally leaves their son, Davis, in his car while he runs errands.
The police come and break into Julian's car to get his baby out and the baby survives. Brooke initially struggles to forgive Julian, but when she sees how hard Julian is being on himself, she knows she has to help him find forgiveness.
8 The Killing Moon (8.6)
At the top of this episode, Hayley can't seem to get a hold of Nathan and she is starting to worry. After trying to call him and getting no answer, Hayley decides to go to the police.
Chris accompanies Hayley to the station, which turns out to be a good thing because, initially, the officer doesn't take Hayley seriously and tells her she can't file a missing person's report until after twenty-four hours have passed. At that point, Chris steps in and tells the officer he needs to help Hayley.
7 Last Known Surroundings (8.6)
The officer who initially sent Hayley away when she tried to report Nathan missing visits Hayley in her home wanting to help now that Nathan's case is being taken seriously. At the same time, Dan has started an investigation of his own knowing that whatever trouble Nathan is in, it's dangerous and he's willing to take matters into his own hands.
This episode also features the return of Chad Michael Murray, playing Lucas Scott, who comes to help Hayley with her children while she looks for Nathan.
6 Anyone Who Had A Heart (8.6)
Julian wants to turn Lucas' story, "An Unkindness of Ravens," into a television series and flies to Los Angeles to pitch it. With some coaching from Brooke, Julian lands the deal and the network decides to move forward with his idea.
Hayley prepares to host the "Burning Boat Festival," where Tree Hill residents fill a boat full of things from the past they want to let go of and the town sets the boat on fire as they send it out into the ocean.
5 Know This, We've Noticed (8.7)
In the first episode of the ninth season, Brooke and Julian are learning how to function on very little sleep now that they are new parents to twin boys. Nathan has been traveling for work, leaving Hayley to parent their children alone.
When Hayley runs into Dan at Brooke's sons' christening, he tells her his diner burned down and he needs a place to stay for a little while. Hayley hesitates but agrees to let Dan crash at her and Nathan's home while he gets back on his feet.
4 A Rush Of Blood To The Head (8.9)
Julian has teamed up with Dan on his search to find and rescue Nathan. Dan suspects that whoever has Nathan is tied to Dan's shady past. Dan goes to the prison where he was previously held and gets information from a Russian inmate who tells him about a group of assassins led by a man named Dmitri.
This new lead gives Dan hope, while Hayley has to go to the morgue to identify a body that could possibly be Nathan's. She is relieved when she gets there and sees that it is not her husband.
3 Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will (9.2)
Dan, Chris Keller, and Julian team up to find and rescue Nathan. After some detective work, they figure out where Nathan is and go to save him.
While there, they confront Dmitri and his partner, Officer Stevens, who is the same officer who turned Hayley away at the station when she first tried to report Nathan missing. Nathan kills Dmitri, Julian kills Stevens, but Dan has been shot and the episode ends with Dan's fate unknown.
2 One Tree Hill (9.4)
The series finale kicks off with Brooke, Hayley, and Nathan visiting their past, high school selves to show how far these core characters have come over the course of nine seasons. It's a nostalgic episode, to say the least.
Brooke tells Julian that her childhood home with the red door deserved a happier family in it, so Julian buys Brooke the house for their young and happy family. There are also a lot of musical performances, including one from Gavin DeGraw, who sang the show's very recognizable theme song.
1 Danny Boy (9.5)
During the rescue mission to bring Nathan home, Dan is shot and is fighting for his life. Nathan and Julian rush Dan to the hospital in a police cruiser. Dan reflects on his life and all of the bad things he's done while he lays in Nathan's arms and Nathan begs him to stay alive.
In Dan's unconscious mind, he and Nathan are at the river court and they make amends. Dan passes away and Keith is the first person he meets in the afterlife, who forgives him.
