Grey's Anatomy: Why Meredith & Cristina Aren't Real Friends
For the first ten seasons of Grey's Anatomy, there existed the ultimate friendship. Two people who would do absolutely anything for each other and valued their friendship more than they valued their own individual romantic relationships. We are, of course, talking about Meredith Grey and Cristina Yang.
These two surgeons were the best of friends from the moment they first met. They were incredibly supportive of each other and had always had each other's backs. Their friendship was also extremely entertaining to watch as Meredith and Cristina's banter was brilliantly funny. However, despite the twisted sisters' notoriety, their friendship wasn't perfect by any means.
10 They Are Incredibly Competitive
This doesn't initially read as a reason as to why Meredith and Cristina aren't real friends, as a little bit of healthy competition is always fun, as long as it isn't taken too far. Mer and Cristina are both highly skilled and innovative surgeons and therefore, a little bit of competing every now and then was to be expected.
However, as fun as competing against your friends is, it can lead to nasty arguments. Neither Cristina or Meredith are strangers to doing anything to gain the upper hand. From Cristina stealing Meredith's 3D printer, to Mer snaking Cristina on their first day, these friends will do anything to win.
9 Cristina Sees Herself As A Superior Doctor
Meredith and Cristina are the best of friends, not just on Grey's Anatomy, but probably all of television. To remain friends for 15 years and counting, even when Cristina left the show in Season 10 is no mean feat. These two wonder women showed the rest of us how it was done.
However, that's not to say that they didn't fall out every now and then. And, like every great friendships, their fallouts were more spectacular than most. Their most recent argument occurred in Season 10, when Cristina openly admitted to Meredith that she is a better surgeon than Mer.
8 Meredith Doesn't Understand Cristina
We're not saying that in order to be best friends with someone that you have to understand every single decision they make and why, because obviously that's a bit of an ask. However, you shouldn't question your friend's decisions just because you disagree with them.
When Cristina declared to Owen that she didn't want children, Owen didn't take it very well and so their relationship started to decline. Meredith, in all fairness to her, was incredibly supportive of Cristina's wishes but she still struggled to understand Cristina's preference of surgery over having children.
7 Meredith Betrayed Cristina The First Time They Met
Meredith and Cristina have literally been friends with each other since the very first episode of Grey's Anatomy aired way back in 2005. They were all in the same group of interns and this allowed the audience to witness the first time they ever met. At first, Mer and Cristina got along fairly well.
They teamed up to find the cause of a young patient's seizures, as Derek Shepherd was stumped. Eventually the twisted sisters came up with an idea which Derek accepted. However, there was only space for one of them in the OR. Derek chose Meredith, who failed to tell him that Cristina should have been chosen.
6 Cristina Didn't Tell Meredith About Owen Cheating On Her
The best friendships are the ones where you tell your friend everything, no matter how personal or how upsetting it may be. A lot of the time, Meredith and Cristina did share everything with each other, much to the chagrin and weariness of their significant others, Owen Hunt and Derek.
However, during the time when Owen and Cristina were having relationship difficulties, Owen had a one night stand. He eventually confessed to a suspicious Cristina, who surprisingly didn't tell Mer. Meredith could have provided support and comfort but Cristina didn't want her to hate Owen as she was considering forgiving him.
5 Meredith Didn't Tell Cristina About Her Pregnancy
Anyone who's a fan of Grey's Anatomy knows that Meredith has been through an awful lot during the show's run. However, one particular problem facing her and Derek, starting in Season 6 onwards, was the fact that she had a hostile womb, meaning that it was more difficult for her to have a baby.
During the shooting, Meredith suffered a miscarriage due to the stress and her medical condition. However, Meredith managed to get pregnant in Season 9, but neglected to tell Cristina. Best friends should be able to trust each other with their news, especially if it's a happy occasion.
4 Their Friendship Was Exclusive
Meredith and Cristina are the perfect match. They're so close to each other, their husbands christened them the twisted sisters, which is an apt, and hilarious, description. However, their close bond makes it difficult for anyone else to get a look in, and can make their other friends feel excluded.
In earlier seasons of the medical drama, it was Izzy who took issue with their friendship, as she was forever being pushed to the side while Mer and Cristina had a whale of a time. Later on, Amelia felt a similar way, when Meredith made her feel awkward over Amelia marrying Cristina's ex, Owen.
3 They Hurt Each Other
Like we mentioned previously, even the best friendships can turn ugly every once in a while. While Meredith and Cristina got along for the best part of ten seasons onscreen together, they did have some pretty awesome fights. Their friendship even started with Mer snaking Cristina for a simple surgery.
In Season 5, Mer (sort of) let Cristina take the fall for their interns operating on each other. To be fair though, Cristina was the only one who saw what they were doing. In Season 7, Cristina blamed Mer for her trauma following the shooting and in Season 10, they had their biggest falling out ever...
2 They're Not Always Supportive Of Each Other
In Season 10, Meredith and Cristina were not on the best of terms. They had been friends for over 9 years by this point and viewers understandably assumed that nothing could come between these two brilliant and badass surgeons. However, their worst fight was soon to come.
Meredith was late for a surgery that she was sharing with Cristina, and so the latter went ahead and operated with Bailey instead. Meredith explained that she was late because of her children and Cristina stated that she respected Mer's choice but that Cristina was the better surgeon because she had fewer distractions. Neither of them supported each other during this period.
1 They're More Like Sisters
We thought we'd end this list on a positive note. The real reason why Meredith and Cristina aren't real friends isn't because they don't always support each other, nor is it because they get slightly competitive every now and again. It's because they're so close that they're basically sisters.
Anyone who knows Meredith, knows that her sisters don't always have to be blood-related. Amelia is her step-sister and yet Meredith is very close to her. However, her original sister, even before Lexie and Maggie came along, was Cristina, as these two clearly loved each other to pieces, even if they did quarrel occasionally.
