New Girl: Every Main Character, Ranked By Funniness | ScreenRant

New Girl aired many hilarious episodes across its seven seasons on Fox. Though the biggest laughs couldn’t have been created without ironic situations, there was one other element of the show that always had viewers laughing: the characters. Today, we’re looking at all of New Girl’s main characters to see how they rank in terms of funniness. While this isn’t the only quality that makes a character great, it is a quality that’s essential in a sitcom.

It’s worth noting that we’ll be including a couple of secondary characters on this list if they appeared in more than one season and had a prominent role in the overall narrative.

With that said, it’s time to rewind the time and head out to L.A.; Here is every main character from New Girl, ranked by funniness.

9 Reagan

Reagan was first introduced in Season 5 after Jess leaves for jury duty. She becomes a temporary loftmate, upsetting Schmidt after he learns about her past with Cece.

Reagan and Nick begin dating and continue even after she moves out of the loft. However, this relationship is problematic because both of them struggle to express themselves and talk through their problems.

While Reagan helped bring out new sides to the other characters, she wasn’t the funniest herself. She was a professional businesswoman who didn’t have much time for games on the side.

8 Sam

Viewers first meet Sam in Season 2, where he enters a casual relationship with Jess. Though he at first works as a standard pediatrician, he ends up dating a principal at a progressive school and turns into a free-spirited soul. Feeling he lost himself along the way, Sam dates Jess again in Season 5, but the two ultimately break up after they realize they’re in love with other people.

While Sam’s character arc and competitiveness with Nick helped create a few funny situations, he as an individual was majorly supported by the shenanigans of the loftmates.

7 Coach

Though Coach is living in the loft at first when Jess moves in, he eventually moves out — only to return a couple of years later after breaking up with his girlfriend. He’s serious about working out and sports, and it’s funny how intense he can get about these topics.

Additionally, Coach is terrible at interacting with ladies, and watching him navigate female friendships and relationships like a normal human being is entertaining.

6 Ruth

Cece and Schmidt’s adorable daughter joins the main cast in the final season of New Girl. Combining the best traits of her mother and father, she was definitely one of the Season 7 highlights.

In addition to being ridiculously cute, Ruth is sassy and knows what she wants. She says what she’s thinking and isn’t afraid to interact with her parents' friends, so we get a lot of childlike one-liners that are hard to forget.

The only thing we’re sad about is that we couldn’t have had her for longer.

5 Cece

Though Cece is good at modeling, she’s even better at being Jess’ best friend. Throughout the series, she gives Jess blunt advice that is super relevant and hilarious.

Cece also has a great dynamic with Schmidt, whom she eventually marries. Throughout her romantic pursuits with both him and other lovers, she tries to keep her life in order. However, it always gets crazy and she offers a lot of sarcastic, exasperated reactions in response.

We can’t leave Cece without mentioning how well she and Winston work together. Their "Classic Cece and Winston Mess-Arounds" prove just how sassy and supportive she can be when working with someone else.

4 Jess

It wouldn't be New Girl without Jess. Thankfully, she packs in the laughs.

Jess is a girly, bubbly, over-the-top teacher who isn’t afraid to be herself, even with others think she’s too much. Her quirks add to her charm, and her awkwardness makes her even more adorable and hillarious.

Viewers loved to watch Jess uncomfortably navigate relationships and move up in her career while holding to everything that makes her the one and only Jessica Day.

3 Nick

Nick has a dry sense of humor we can't get enough of. The bartender-turned-author is terrible at dealing with money, struggles to maintain a healthy adult relationship, and doesn't care for himself as a normal human should. This makes for a ton of funny situations.

Nick also has a load of quirks. These include sweating intensely when he's lying, moonwalking out of situations when he's uncomfortable, and being stubborn all the time. It's hard to imagine New Girl without this character who tries to balance out the loft by being the "normal" one. He's totally crazy in his own way.

2 Winston

Winston is arguably the silliest of the loftmates. He ends up moving in after Coach leaves, having played basketball in Latvia for two years prior. Because of this, he's not up-to-date on anything that has happened in the U.S.

Winston is sweet, goofy, and kind of oblivious. He deems himself "Prank Sinatra," even though everyone else knows his pranks always go way too big or way too small. Additionally, lots of hillarious moments are created when Winston treats his cat Ferguson like a real person.

Other Winston highlights include the time he belted out Wicked in the car and the moment he got obsessive about putting together a puzzle.

1 Schmidt

Topping off the list is the one and only Schmidt. Though every New Girl character adds flavor to the series, Schmidt is by far the most hillarious.

At the beginning of New Girl, Schmidt is a total player. However, he can't help but be charmed by Cece and be willing to do anything to be with her. This creates for some laugh-out-loud situations.

Additionally, Schmidt's nature as an image-obsessed germaphobe adds to his hilarity. He cares deeply about what others think of him and is frequently offended by the actions of everyone else in the loft. Dramatic and over-the-top, you know that when Schmidt comes on screen, funny situations are just waiting to happen.
