House: 10 Storylines That Were Never Resolved | ScreenRant

Hit Drama House M.D.  was one of the top shows of its time with plenty of awards in its kitty. A medical drama with a fascinating lead character, House brought its viewers some mind-boggling medical mysteries, which the eccentric genius, Dr. Gregory House, would solve, with some help from his excellent team of doctors.

Although the show lost much of its former glory in its final season, fans still remember it fondly, mainly because of the performance of its lead characters over the years. However, House M.D. had some unresolved storylines, a few of them involving the protagonists themselves.

10 How Does Lisa Cuddy’s Story End?

Lisa Cuddy was one of the fan favorites. She was the Dean of Medicine at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital and House’s love interest. House and Cuddy went through a heck of tango when it came to their relationship, going back and forth until ultimately Cuddy had a major health scare which forced House to relapse into his Vicodin addiction.

Cuddy recovered from her surgery only to find out the truth about House falling back on his pain meds. This time she was unable to forgive him and in a moment of complete disorientation, House drove a car into Cuddy’s house after they had broken up for good. This was the last we saw of Cuddy. For someone the audience had rooted for, for seven years, as they endured the almost unbearable antics of Dr. House, losing her so suddenly with no resolution to her story, was a huge dampener.

9 James Wilson Had An Ambiguous Ending

Dr. James Wilson was a beloved character, not least because he was someone who tolerated House’s idiosyncrasies more times than one can imagine. Learning that Wilson had cancer was devastating for viewers and watching him go through the painful chemo made matters worse. The only redeeming feature here was knowing that House accompanied Wilson at such a time.

However, Wilson’s story didn’t get a proper closure either. The last we saw of Wilson was when he realized that House was not dead after all, and the two of them rode off on their fancy motorcycles, presumably to enjoy what was left of their lives. The audience never got to know whether Wilson died in the end or whether the two best friends went on to live a daredevil life. Once again, the ending was ambiguous.

8 The Kutner Storyline Ended On An Abrupt Note

Kutner was the adorable geek who joined House’s team in the Department of Diagnostic Medicine and had a short run as someone who House grew to like and trust. However, actor Kal Penn had to leave the show abruptly to pursue a new career as a result of which the writers had to end his character hurriedly.

The hurried ending, however,  left Kutner’s story vague. The audience was not even shown his face, as a body was seen lying on the floor of his room. Foreman and Thirteen apparently tried to resuscitate him. The death of Kutner hit House more than he liked to admit, but it was never cleared up whether it was a suicide or a murder.

7 How Did Thirteen’s Story Resolve?

Of course, it’s not always possible to get closure on all characters in an ensemble cast. But when a show runs for several years, it’s natural to develop a need to know what happened to the characters you had taken the journey with.

Thirteen joined House’s team after his former team disassembled and he had to choose a new set of doctors to join his department. Thirteen was shown to be carrying the genes for Huntington’s Disease and her character went through several ups and downs until she finally settled down with a girlfriend. However, she was trouble-prone, having served time in jail for euthanizing her brother. The audience was once again left at a loose end as her character seemed to get a rather hurried send-off.

6 The Foreman-House Dynamic Remained Largely Unaddressed

Eric Foreman was one of the best on House’s team of specialists. The relationship between House and Foreman was maddening, to say the least, a kind of love-hate relationship where each grudgingly respected the other.

Foreman took a backseat after actor Lisa Edelstein who played Lisa Cuddy left the show. Foreman was promoted to the position of Dean of Medicine at the Princeton-Plainsboro and he was no longer a part of House’s team. The viewers missed how Foreman and House challenged each other and their relationship dynamics never had the scope to pan out properly.

5 Where Did Martha Masters Disappear?

Martha Masters appeared in season 7 briefly as a replacement for Thirteen. Masters was a brilliant med student whom Cuddy had thrust upon House. Since Princeton-Plainsboro was a teaching hospital, and Masters was the brightest in her batch, House was expected to take her under his wing.

Naturally, House was not about to make it smooth sailing for a young med student, however smart. Masters was annoying, constantly at loggerheads with House. She did, however, grab the audience’s attention and then she simply quit, only to turn up once in the series finale in House’s funeral. It’s true that she was a guest star but her arc seemed to remain incomplete.

4 Where Did Allison Cameron Go?

Allison Cameron was one of the members on House’s team until season 5. She then made a guest appearance in season 6 when she finally left Chase after getting him to sign the divorce papers and sleeping with him one last time.

Cameron’s relationship with House was one of the main storylines in the first few seasons. Cameron was clearly in love with House and the latter shooed her off even though there were hints that he liked her. In fact, he liked her so much that in one of his Vicodin addled visions, House actually fantasized about Cameron. However, once she left the show, and before she turned up in House’s funeral, there was hardly any mention of her.

3 The Curious Case of House’s Biological Father

This was a mystery that never got solved, which is surprising because one of the defining traits of House’s character was that he couldn’t let go of something until he had solved it. He would obsess after whatever it was that was bothering him and go at it until he was satisfied.

With his track record though, House was not able to solve the mystery of his paternity. He apparently suspected since forever that the man his mother was married to was not his biological father. But after his father’s death, it’s revealed that the person he suspected to be his father was not the real deal either. For someone like House, it’s strange that he never resolves this mystery about his own father.

2 Did House Cheat In School?

In season 2, it’s revealed that House cheated in medical school which led to his expulsion. The audience is told that he copied some exams from his fellow schoolmate Philip Webber, who ratted him out which led to House getting expelled.

One wonders why someone like House would need to cheat to get through an exam. It’s true that House was someone who could play fast and loose with orders. He was a rebel, a rule-breaker. But it seemed odd that a person like House would stoop to cheating to pass an exam. Although, to be honest, there were times when some of House’s actions were quite unforgivable…but cheating? That never quite sat well and was never clarified.

1 How Does House’s Story End?

This is the biggest of them all. Dr. Greg House kept the audience hooked for eight years and then left them hanging in the end. Like Sherlock Holmes, House came back from the dead and dashed off into the unknown with his buddy, Wilson.

The show had an ambiguous ending as the friends decided to go off on an adventure of a lifetime, to spend together whatever time they had left. What happened to House is left to one’s imagination. Did he ever get back to being the genius doctor that he is? How did his story really end?
