10 Plot Twists That Hurt Pretty Little Liars | ScreenRant
Pretty Little Liars is a TV show that thrived on plot twists. Without these fast-paced storylines and big reveals, the show would definitely seem pretty dull, even though there are enough love stories to keep fan interest going strong. But even though plot twists are generally fun and entertaining, not all of them are the best decisions.
In the case of PLL, a lot of the craziest things that have happened on the show haven't been super popular with fans. Read on to find out 10 plot twists that hurt Pretty Little Liars.
10 Ezra Could Be On The A Team
In the season four episode "Now You See Me, Now You Don't," fans learned that Ezra Fitz (Ian Harding) could be on the A Team. This was a huge problem for his one true love Aria Montgomery (Lucy Hale), of course.
When fans saw Ezra in his lair, where he was literally spying on them and had all kinds of computers and surveillance hooked up, it was a plot twist, that's for sure. But it's a plot twist that hurt the show. Since fans later discovered that Ezra wasn't actually A or part of the team, it didn't seem like there was any reason to make them question his integrity and how good of a person he was.
9 Ezra Dated Ali And Was Writing About Her
This plot twist comes in the season four episode "Free Fall." Fans find out that Ezra knew Alison DiLaurentis before and they even had a romantic relationship. That would be a big enough plot twist since Ezra and Aria are such an end game kind of couple that no one would expect him to date one of her friends. But then there's more for fans to learn: Ezra was writing a book about Ali.
Even though this was a wild moment, it definitely hurt the show. It made fans wonder if they could trust Ezra at all, and that wasn't a great feeling since there are enough sketchy, mean characters on a show like this one.
8 Mona Is A
Fans find out that Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish) is A in the second season finale. This is a plot twist that hurt the show for one main reason: Mona is treated as a very wishy-washy character for the rest of the series. Sometimes she's a pal to the liars and other times, she's a jerk.
It's hard for fans to know if they should find Mona trustworthy or not, making this a storyline that didn't need to happen. If the plot twist was going to be as dramatic and impactful as it was meant to be,
7 Mona Is In The Dollhouse, Too
The PLL episode "Welcome to the Dollhouse" is well-crafted, as it becomes more and more obvious that A is a seriously dangerous threat and the girls could actually lose their lives. But one plot twist after this major storyline is Mona ending up in the dollhouse, too.
It takes a while for the liars (and viewers) to figure out what Mona is doing there. She's dressed like Alison and even refers to herself as Ali, and it's kind of weird. The fact that Mona is there, too, hurt the show because it's way too confusing.
6 Ali's Mom Has A Twin
Pretty Little Liars devoted a lot of screen time in its later seasons to Mary Drake (Andrea Parker). This character is the twin sister of Jessica DiLaurentis, Ali's mom.
It turns out that Mary was at Radley and she's also the mom of Charlotte Drake. This is a pretty bad plot twist because it fell totally flat, and since fans aren't exactly on Ali's mom's side, it didn't seem necessary to learn more about her family background.
5 Elliot's Betrayal Of Ali
Ali and Elliot Rollins (real name: Archer Dunhill) turns out to be a real jerk as fans learn, in a massive plot twist, that he has been lying about who he is. He and Mary Drake have got a plan up their sleeves, and he's only pretending to love Ali.
This is a plot twist that hurt the show because by this point, fans were pretty tired of Ali. She's not the most likeable character from the beginning as she's portrayed as a mean girl who doesn't care about anyone except herself. Near the end of the show, she seems to have been making tons of selfish decisions and she's prone to moping around and feeling sorry for herself. This definitely fell flat.
4 Toby Could Be A
In the third season of Pretty Little Liars, fans see Toby Cavanaugh (Keegan Allen) as a member of the A Team. It's horrible and crazy to imagine Spencer's boyfriend getting involved in something like this, but this isn't much of a plot twist because the show then tells viewers that Toby did this to protect Spencer.
If PLL is going to have a wild plot twist, they need to see it through. In this case, Toby should have been a member of the A Team for real, as this would have been powerful, or he needed to just be a good person and have nothing to do with this.
3 Charlotte Drake Is Transgender
In the episode "Game Over, Charles," Charlotte Drake explained that she was born Charles DiLaurentis and Charlotte/CeCe was put in Radley because she wanted to be true to herself and her family was incredibly unsupportive.
This wasn't a storyline that fans were okay with because Charlotte had been playing with the liars and ruining their lives for a long time. This suggested that she was an awful, cruel person, and that is offensive. Fans were very disappointed and didn't think that it was a good plot twist... and using someone's gender identity as a plot twist is pretty offensive in and of itself. This wasn't a good move for the series.
2 Bethany Young Was Buried Alive, Not Ali
As soon as PLL began, fans operated under the assumption that Ali was dead and perhaps had even been buried alive. This is something that was brought up a lot as no one knew what had happened to her.
When fans learned that Bethany Young had been buried alive and it wasn't actually Ali, this wasn't the fun kind of plot twist that makes someone gasp at their TV screen. It was yet another annoying red herring that the show had put in place. So many of these have added up over the years that it can be kind of mentally trying.
1 Spencer Has An Evil Twin, Alex Drake
Fans knew that they were in for a treat when Pretty Little Liars ended after seven seasons... or at least they hoped that would be the case. Not everyone was pleased when the finale brought this big plot twist: Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario) had an evil twin this entire time, Alex Drake, and she was "A.D."
Many fans thought that this was a crazy storyline, and it honestly seemed like a simple way for the series to wrap everything up in a pretty (no pun intended) bow. Sure, maybe nothing would have made every fan happy since there was so much build-up for this big reveal. But it seemed like the easy way out, and it definitely hurt the show since fans wanted a better series ending.
